Well here are the eagerly awaited results of the inaugural consettafc.com Readers Poll.
There was a good response and the outcome was certainly very interesting. So thanks to
you all for taking part and without further ado, here are the results - and not a gold
envelope to be seen!
Player of the Season
1 : JAMES PLATTEN
2 = : Rod Butler
2 = : Colin McLeod
James won this one by the proverbial country mile. There is no doubt he
has had an outstanding season, in which at first he had to fend off a challenge
for keeper's spot by Johnston, and at the end battled gamely on with a rib
injury though the end of season relegation fight. He has now established
himself as one of the best keepers in the league. Rod Butler's consistent
performances in both defence and midfield, and Colin McLeod's excellent leading
of the line resulted in them tie-ing for second place.
Most Promising Newcomer
1 : NEIL LOWDON
2 : Andrew Thompson
3 : Roy Gordon
Plenty to choose from in this category as a number of young players have come
through the ranks this season. Neil Lowdon just shaded it though, having
made the left midfield slot his own, and even putting in some sterling
performances at right wing back at the end of the season. Andrew Thompson
had a good first season, finishing top scorer despite playing mostly in
midfield, while Roy Gordon featured more and more in the first team as the
season wore on.
Goal of the Season
1 : TONY HALLIDAY - v Whitley Bay (H)
2 : Rod Butler - v Bedlington (A)
3 : Ian Davison - v Brandon (A)
Tiger's vital strike against Whitley Bay won this category. Not only was
it a superb effort, allowing a diagonal ball from Roy Gordon to bounce once
before hitting a stinging left foot volley low to the keeper's left, but it was
also a crucial one. Consett came into this game off the back of two points
from the previous seven games and fighting for their First Division lives in the
last week of the season. A deserved winner. Rod Butler's calm finish
to secure an opening day win at champions Bedlington was a popular choice, and
Ian Davison's superb free kick at Brandon got third place. Ian also
received votes for two other goals, so if everyone had decided what his best
goal was this season he could have won it!
Favourite Away Ground
1 : DURHAM CITY
2 : Billingham Town
3 : Ashington
New Ferens Park won this category quite easily, but opinion was certainly
divided for the minor placings. Billingham Town just shaded Ashington for
second place, but Billingham Synthonia, Dunston Fed, Bedlington, Whitley Bay,
Washington and even Morpeth were in the running.
Highlight/Funniest Moment of the Season:
The Highlight of the Season vote threw up a couple of recurring themes - the
first and last games of the season. Winning our first game at Bedlington
was certainly a highlight that wasn't really bettered during the rest of the
season, while for many beating Durham in our last match to guarantee First
Division football next year was more of a relief than anything else. Some
suggested seeing Consett win at home was a highlight - it certainly didn't
happen very often!
Any other comments:
Some of you took this opportunity to praise the committee and the manager for their
sterling work throughout the season. Without them there would be no football club and
those sentiments are certainly seconded here. Keep up the good work chaps!
