October 2009 News

31 October 2009

In a decidedly inconsistent season one factor which is proving pleasantly consistent is Consett's away form. The Steelmen registered their fourth consecutive away win, and the seventh from their last eight away games, by winning 2-0 at Norton & Stockton Ancients. It was two goals from Mattie Mofaft, the first of this his second spell at the club, that did the damage.. The first came eight minutes after the break following a great through ball from Gary Ormston, and Moffat completed the job in the last minute after another defence-splitting Ormston pass. The win moves Consett up to 6th in the table.

Your correspondent has received an email from erstwhile Consett keeper James Platten with the sad news that his career is over. Now living in Kent, James had up until recently been playing for Chatham Town in Ryman League Division One, making 12 appearances and never finishing on the losing side in any of them. Earlier this week however James went in for a shoulder operation, a legacy from an injury picked up in a pre-season friendly against Birtley Town in 2002. What was meant to be in 45 minute procedure took 2 hours due to complications and as a consequence James has been told he can't play again. Always a popular figure at Belle Vue, as witnessed by his well-supported testimonial a couple of years back, everyone at Consett sends their best wishes to James for the future.

In tonight's local derby Consett went down 1-2 at home to ten-man Tow Law Town. The Lawyers, managed for the first time by David Hagan, who 48 hours earlier had resigned from the assistant manager's position at Consett to take up the reins at Ironworks Road, took the lead in the 21st minute when Mark Eccles (another ex-Steelman) scored direct from a corner. Five minutes before the break Consett levelled when Steve Huggins converted from the spot after David Scorer had been impeded in the box by Mark Salmon - who received a straight red for the foul. Far from being a pivotal moment though, it was Tow Law who went on to score what proved to be the winning goal on the stroke of half time through Lewis Teasdale. Consett couldn't make the extra man count after the break and although Gary Ormston was unlucky to see a fine effort cannon back off the crossbar, the home side rarely threatened to get anything out of the game.

Consett recovered from an early setback to register a 3-1 home win over Ryton today. Kevin Dixon put the visitors ahead after just two minutes, but the Steelmen were level within a further two minutes as Steven Johnson made it 1-1. Two goals in the final five minutes of the first half, scored by Gary Ormston and Steven Huggins made it 3-1 at the break. There was no further scoring in the second half which meant Consett returned to winning ways in the league and moved up to 7th in the table.

In today's draw for the 2nd Round of the Durham Challenge Cup Consett were handed an away tie at fellow Division One side Norton & Stockton Ancients, who are in their first season in the top division of the Northern League. The match is to be played by 7 November 2009, and as Norton usually play their midweek games on a Wednesday night, the likely date for the game is therefore Wednesday 4 November.

Well, never let it be said that watching Consett is dull. The Steelmen progressed to the 2nd Round of the Durham Challenge Cup at a wet Esh Winning this evening, but only after a game that was extraordinary even by their standards. It was a personal triumph for David Pounder who scored all four in a 4-3 win, and he set the tone for the evening firing Consett ahead after just 15 seconds (pictured above). The diminutive striker went on to complete his hat trick in just 13 minutes, first firing in from the edge of the box straight through the keeper who really should have stopped it, and then lashing the ball into an unguarded net as Consett capitalised on a poor Esh clearance. Incredibly though, despite taking an early three goal advantage, the lead was wiped out by half time. Goals from John Ryan (29 minutes), Danny Craggs (41) and Stuart Thompson (45) ensured that Consett had it all to do again in the second half. A far more low key affair followed after the break with the only goal proving to be the decisive one, again scored by Pounder in the 53rd minute latching onto a superb Jonjo Dickman through ball to find the corner of the net with a precise curling finish.

17 October 2009

Consett's Jekyll and Hyde season continued when they followed three wins in a week with a shocking 0-3 home defeat to struggling Bishop Auckland at Belle Vue today. After a goalless first half the Steelmen were undone by Adam Emson, who signed for Bishops from Consett a little over two weeks ago. He scored the first two minutes after the restart and then was fouled twice in the area for two penaltes both converted by Stephen Salvin. To compound Consett's misery the second penalty led to a sending off for keeper Dan Staples, meaning they finished with ten men and Jonjo Dickman in goal.

Another team in green, another win! Consett made it three victories in a week by fighting back from going a goal behind to Esh Winning to run out comfortable 4-1 winners at Belle Vue this evening. The Steelmen went behind to a 34th minute goal from Jamie Dawson, but were level within two minutes thanks to a trademark David Pounder free kick. Gary Ormston continued his rich vein of scoring form, heading Consett ahead 9 minutes into the second half, and then Pounder's emphatic finish on the hour doubled the lead. Michael Coulthard claimed the fourth on 72 minutes, although there was a suspicion of an own goal about it!

Consett registered a second consecutive 2-1 away win - coincidentally both against sides playing in green and white - when they overcame West Allotment Celtic at Blue Flames today. And it was man-of-the moment Gary Ormston who did the damage scoring both goals to take his total for the season to seven and become Consett's top scorer in the process. His first came on 24 minutes when superbly volleyed home a Steve Huggins cross (pictured above). His doubled his and Consett's tally on the hour mark, drilling home a low shot from just outside the area. By this time Gaz was playing as a striker alongside Scott Martindale who was making his first start. In reality the score could easily have been 6-4 with the Steelmen squandering several chances, whilst at the same time being indebted to an inspired display from young keeper Dan Staples who denied Celtic with a string of fine saves. The home side pulled one back four minutes from time through Paul Gardiner but Consett hung on through five minutes of stoppage time for the win.

7 October 2009

A welcome return to winning ways for Consett this evening, although they left it late - coming from behind to win 2-1 at Billingham Synthonia. It was almost inevitable that after winning at Central Avenue for the first time in nearly 20 years last season that they would win there again this season, but that looked pretty unlikely when Andy Harbron's 25 yard daisy cutter found the net to give Synners the lead on 69 minutes. Consett drew level though seven minutes from time when Steve Huggins converted a penalty awarded for handball. More drama was to follow though in the first minute of stoppage time when Gary Ormston (pictured above) ghosted in at the back post to head home Carl Piecha's cross and give the Steelmen all three points.

Consett's interest in the FA Vase ended at the first hurdle for the second year running, as they went out of the competition at home to Bedlington Terriers, losing 0-2. After a goalless first half played in near gale force winds, the Terriers took the lead through a calm finish from Lee Ludlow. Bedlington certainly made best use of the conditions with the wind at their backs in the second half, and secured the win when Gareth McAlindon's left wing corner sailed in directly.
