July 2009 News

29 July 2009

CONSETT ran out 4-1 winners in their latest friendly outing tonight against Wearside League neighbours Annfield Plain. The lively Richard Logan, making his first pre-season appearance, opened the scoring on 13 minutes, firing into the roof of the net from the edge of the area from Gary Ormston's lay-off. Logan also had a hand in the second goal, which came on 21 minutes. His cross from the right was diverted into his own net by a lunging defender. Consett made a handful of substitutions at half-time, and it was one of the replacements, Nathan Fisher, who created the next goal a minute after the re-start. He was brought down in the box, for David Pounder to make it 3-0 from the penalty spot. Fisher then combined with Ormston to make it 4-0 on the hour. Consett could have added to their tally, but to their credit Annfield Plain never gave up, and got the consolation goal their efforts deserved with six minutes left, their No 7 netting with a deft chip over the Steelmen's 'keeper.

There's also news of an additional pre-season friendly which takes place on Monday 3 August when we will play Team Northumbria again, this time at their place. Kick off is 7.00pm.

28 July 2009

There has been a slight change to the fixture list, with our away game at Billingham Synthonia originally scheduled for 5 September postponed due to Synners being in FA Vase action that day. Our away game at Shildon has been brought forward to that date from February to fill the gap.

Just to confirm that tomorrow night's friendly against Annfield Plain is an AWAY game, and not home as previously indicated above. In other news the next meeting of the Consett AFC Supporters Club has been arranged for Monday 10 August, starting at 7:30pm in the club bar, all supporters welcome.

25 July 2009

CRAIG Tate made it three goals in as many friendlies by setting the ball rolling after just 11 minutes in today's friendly against more Northern League 2nd Division opposition in the shape of Team Northumbria. When David Scorer made it 2-0 seven minutes later, it looked like there might be a repeat of the FA Cup game between the sides two seasons ago, when Consett ran out 11-0 winners. But although Adam Emson hit the post before the break, and second-half sub Steven Johnson could have had four goals, a Consett side missing 12 players through injury or unavailability had to settle for 2-0.

The friendly at Annfield Plain which was rained off last Saturday has been re-arranged for this Wednesday, July 29, kick-off 7pm.

22 July 2009

CONSETT'S scheduled friendly against Northern League 2nd Division side Washington was postponed tonight, with injuries and unavailability leaving their opponents unable to field a side. But rather than be inactive after Saturday's game at Annfield Plain was rained off, a full-scale practice match was held at South Moor Juniors' ground, with Hag's Blues running out 3-1 winners over Kenny's Reds. The bulk of last season's first-team squad were involved, plus a number of triallists, including former Durham City man David Duke, who signed on after the game - an excellent acquisition, as he played more than 200 pro games for Swindon and Darlington. Adam Emson opened the scoring for the Blues on 15 minutes, and a David Pounder own goal made it 2-0 after 29 minutes. Young striker Matty Scott, stepping up from the Under-21s, reduced the arrears seven minutes before half-time, and another own goal by a triallist made it 3-1 after the break. All in all, it was a good, competitive workout, marred only by a nasty-looking injury to young full-back Lewis Harrison, who twisted his ankle on the soft pitch.

18 July 2009

Consett's pre-season friendly at Annfield Plain was POSTPONED due to a waterlogged pitch following two days of incessant rain.

16 July 2009

The result of Consett's pre-season friendly tonight at home to Brandon United was a 1-0 win for the Steelmen, with Craig Tate getting the only goal.

15 July 2009

Another friendly has been announced, Consett will play Washington at South Moor next Wednesday 22 July, kick off 7:00pm.

13 July 2009

The next Consett Supporters Club meeting will take place on Monday 27 July at 7:30pm in the club bar, all are welcome. At the inaugural meeting on 8 July a Supporters Club yearly membership fee of £2 was agreed on to run from 1 August 2009 until 31 July 2010. All membership fees will be passed over to the football club as it was agreed that the Supporters Club will be a non profit making enterprise. Membership of the Supporters Club will entitle members to first priority when arranging away travel and cheaper fares than non-members. A thriving Supporters Club will be a great benefit to the club so come along to the meeting or join up if you can.

In other news Consett have hastily arranged a further pre-season fixture against Brandon United on Thursday 16 July, kick off 7:00pm and again it will be played at South Moor Juniors.

11 July 2009

Consett began their pre-season preparations, playing out a 2-2 draw against Whickham at the home of South Moor Juniors. The Steelmen dominated the first half but only led by one at the interval, the goal coming in the 40th minute from Craig Tate after he was set up by Steven Johnson. Whickham hit back after 49 mins when ex-Steelman Michael Pitt scored direct from a free-kick. Whickham took the lead five minutes later when Craig Hodgson scored with a lob over the keeper before a David Pounder free-kick hit the post after 59 mins. The equaliser came on 64 mins when Pounder gave the keeper no chance from the penalty spot.

8 July 2009

Consett have announced the first of their pre-season friendlies. They will play Whickham on Saturday 11 July with the game taking place at South Moor Juniors, as Belle Vue pitch is not ready. The following Saturday, 18 July, the Steelmen travel to Annfield Plain for what has become something of an annual fixture. Then on Saturday 25 July Consett play Team Northumbria at home. All games are 3.00 kick offs.

1 July 2009

The draws for the FA competitions for the coming season have been made. In the FA Cup, Consett once again find themselves in action in the Extra Preliminary Rround, with a home tie against Billingham Town on Saturday 15 August. This of course means that the league game scheduled for that date (West Auckland at home) has been postponed. Should Consett win through then they will be at home again in the Preliminary Round two weeks later, when Harrogate Railway will be the visitors to Belle Vue. Should we overcome the Yorkshire side then we will progress to the 1st Qualifying Round on Saturday 12 September when we will face an away tie against our nemesis from last season North Ferriby United.

In the FA Vase the picture is a little simpler. We have received an exemption to the 1st Round proper, and that will take place on Saturday 3 October when we will have a home tie against whoever wins through from Esh Winning, Bedlington Terriers or Jarrow Roofing.
