End Of Season Poll 2008/09

Results

All the votes have been counted so here are the results of the Eighth Annual consettafc.com Readers Poll.  A very good response this year, in keeping with what was a very good season overall.  Many thanks to all who took part, and here, once again without a gold envelope in sight, are the results:

Player of the Season
1 : CARL PIECHA
2 : David Pounder
3 : Chris Scott

2007/08 - 1 : MATTIE MOFFAT, 2 : Carl Piecha, 3 : Steven Brown
2006/07 - 1 : MICHAEL MACKAY, 2 : Gary Ormston, 3 : Jonjo Dickman
2005/06 - 1 : STEVEN BROWN, 2 : David Johnson, 3 : Gary Ormston
2004/05 - 1 : JEFF SUGDEN, 2 : Lee Suddes, 3 : James Platten
2003/04 - 1 : MICHAEL PITT, 2 : Jeff Sugden, 3 : James Platten
2002/03 - 1 : DARREN GRIMES, 2 : Jeff Sugden, 3 : Colin McLeod
2001/02 - 1 : JAMES PLATTEN, 2 = : Rod Butler & Colin McLeod

An absolute landslide for the boy Piecha this one, with only four people who registered a vote not placing him either first or second. Not since the near unanimous voting for Jeff Sugden in 2005 has there been such agreement in this category. By contrast there was absolutely nothing between second and third, as Prof and Scotty finished level on points AND on overall votes cast. In the end, Pounder just nicked second by virtue of number of first places.

Most Promising Newcomer
1 : CHRIS SCOTT
2 : Jack Norton
3 : David Scorer

2007/08 - 1 : JOHN CLARK, 2 : Michael Coulthard, 3 : Mattie Moffat
2006/07 - 1 : IAN ROBSON, 2 : Jonjo Dickman, 3 : Craig Robson
2005/06 - 1 : CARL PIECHA, 2 : Alan Oliver, 3 : Steven Brown
2004/05 - 1 : ROBBIE BLEMINGS, 2 : Mark Turner, 3 : Ben Thompson
2003/04 - 1 : MICHAEL PITT, 2 : Paul Terrell, 3= : Paul Curry & Andrew Morgan
2002/03 - 1 : STEVE SMITH, 2 : Andrew Green, 3 : Greg Scott
2001/02 - 1 : NEIL LOWDON, 2 : Andrew Thompson, 3 : Roy Gordon

Again the absence of any conventional "Young Players" from the squad means that this is essentially a poll for those players in their first season at the club. In that sense, Chris Scott has certainly been one of the finds of the season with a string of impressive displays in midfield. New keeper Jack Norton has proved to be a popular signing with followers of the Steelmen, as he pipped young centre back David Scorer for the runners-up spot. A rather odd feature common to all previous winners except Carl Piecha is that they'd all left the club within a year of winning this award, so we can only hope Scotty bucks that particular trend!

Goal of the Season
1 : ANDREW CUTHBERTSON - v Ryton (A)
2 : Adam Emson - v Newcastle Benfield (H)
3 : Steven Brown - v Newcastle Benfield (A)

2007/08 - 1 : PATTERSON - v Durham City (A), 2 : Pounder - v Merstham (A - FA Vase), 3 : Brown - v Poole Town (A - FA Vase)
2006/07 - 1 : DICKMAN - v Durham City (A), 2 : Pounder - v Rossendale United (H), 3 : Wilkinson - v Chester-le-Street Town (N - DCC Final)
2005/06 - 1 : TATE - v Sunderland Nissan (H), 2 : Macdonald - v Kennek Ryhope (A), 3 : Ormston - v Worsbrough Bridge (H)
2004/05 - 1 : BANKS - v Whitley Bay (A), 2 : Edgcumbe - v West Auckland (H), 3 : Grimes - v Peterlee (H)
2003/04 - 1 : PITT - v Whickham (A), 2 : Terrell - v Norton (H), 3 : Kirkham - v Norton (A)
2002/03 - 1 : GREEN - v Prudhoe (H), 2 : McLeod - v Prudhoe (A), 3= : Grimes - v Durham (A) & B.Thompson - v West Auckland (A)
2001/02 - 1 : HALLIDAY - v Whitley Bay (H), 2 : Butler - v Bedlington (A), 3 : Davison - v Brandon (A)

There weren't really any genuinely stand-out goals from the 116 we scored in all competitions this year so this was quite a wide open category. In the end though Andrew Cuthbertson's 25-yard dipping volley at Ryton to level the scores at 2-2 with 4 minutes left was the overall winner. Two goals against double-winners Benfield were placed second and third. Adam Emson's late winner at Belle Vue in April to put our title hopes back in our hands was runner-up, more for its importance at the time than its quality. Brownie's opening goal in a 3-1 win at Benfield Park back in September - a venomous strike from the edge of the box whilst being fouled - was placed third.

Favourite Away Ground
1 : WHITLEY BAY
2 : Billingham Synthonia
3 : South Shields

2007/08 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2 : Billingham Synthonia, 3 : Whitley Bay
2006/07 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2 : Billingham Synthonia, 3 : Sunderland Nissan
2005/06 - 1 : CROOK TOWN, 2 : Darlington RA, 3 : Prudhoe Town
2004/05 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2 : Whitley Bay, 3 : Billingham Synthonia
2003/04 - 1 : ASHINGTON, 2 : Crook Town, 3 : Prudhoe Town
2002/03 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2= : Whitley Bay & Billingham Synthonia
2001/02 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2 : Billingham Town, 3 : Ashington

With perennial winners Durham City no longer in the league, the way was paved for a new Division One winner this season and it turned out, ironically, to be the scene of our final day heartache - Hillheads, Whitley Bay! That finished level on points with Synners' Central Avenue, but won by virtue of more votes cast. There was a new name on the leader board in third place, with Shields' Filtrona Park no doubt capitalising on the fact we won there on a glorious spring day in March. Again there was fairly scattergun voting pattern though, with only four grounds (for the record Morpeth, Penrith, Nissan and Seaham) NOT receiving at least one vote from someone.

Top Scran (Best catering at an away ground)
1 : CHESTER-LE-STREET TOWN
2 : Penrith
3 : Bedlington Terriers

2007/08 - 1= : DURHAM CITY & CHESTER-LE-STREET TOWN, 3 : West Allotment Celtic
2006/07 - 1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN, 2 : Chester-le-Street Town, 3 : Durham City
2005/06 - 1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN, 2 : Darlington RA, 3 : Ryton
2004/05 - 1 : HORDEN CW, 2 : Durham City, 3= : Whitley Bay & Chester-le-Street Town
2003/04 - 1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN, 2 : Seaham Red Star, 3= : Whickham & Willington
2002/03 - 1 : WHITLEY BAY, 2= : Dunston Fed, Shildon & Newcastle Blue Star
2001/02 - no result, new category

The ever-popular burger van at Chester-le-Street, offering among other things bacon sarnies and fish fingers, ensured an outright win this year following a joint-first last year and a runners-up spot the year before. Penrith's excellent snack bar was certainly welcome on the bitterly cold January day we played there this season, whilst Bedlington make the top three for the first time.

Highlight/Funniest Moment of the Season:

This isn't really a category as such, more just an opportunity to share any funny stories or experiences accrued over the season.  However if it had been a category the outright winner would have been manager Kenny Lindoe getting pounced on during the celebrations after Steven Johnson scored his injury time winner against Billingham Synthonia. Kenny took a bit of stick in this section with someone else picking up on an occasion where he dropped the substitute numbers, while a Mr K Nellis said the highlight of his season was the one time he got the team sheet from Ken on time! Erstwhile keeper James Platten, who I'm delighted to say took the time to vote, thought his programme profile was the funniest thing this season. Other people picked out particular games as their highlight, notably winning at Synners for the first time since Nelson Mandela was released from prison!

Right, that's that. Many thanks to you all for participating and surely 2009-10 has to bring us that elusive league title. Hasn't it?!
