October 2008 News

28 October 2008

Consett participation in this season's League Cup lasted precisely 90 minutes as were dumped out in the first round by a good looking Penrith side on a freezing cold night in East Cumbria. It was a disappointing defeat to end a run of five successive wins, but the die was cast as early as the 8th minute when Michael Brown rounded James Platten to net with ease. The Blues doubled their lead after 23 minutes through Robinson's 25 yards strike. Both sides were reduced to ten men within a minute around the hour mark, Consett's Jonjo Dickman receiving a second yellow shortly before Penrith's Brown talked himself into a red card to follow him down the tunnel. The tie was ended when Willie Paul added a third five minutes from time.

Consett moved to the top of the skilltrainingltd Northern League Division One table with a 4-1 win over visiting South Shields at a windswept Belle Vue Park. After a goalless first half, Consett made the game safe with three goals in nine minutes early in the second period. Steve Johnson set the ball rolling with a mis-hit shot on 48 minutes, Gary Ormston doubled the lead six minutes later and then Craig Robson scored his first of the season with a delightful chip. Ellison pulled one back for Shields from the penalty spot after 82 minutes, but Chris Scott restored Consett's three goal advantage two minutes later to make it 23 goals in five games for the free-scoring Steelmen.

It has now been confirmed that our Durham Challenge Cup 2nd round tie against Darlington has been switched to Belle Vue, and will take place on Wednesday 5 November.

23 October 2008

The draw was made for the 2nd round of the Durham Challenge Cup today and Consett were handed an away tie at Darlington. We have of course faced The Quakers quite recently, in a pre-season friendly in July when goals from Joe Craig and Steven Brown gave us a 2-2 against a young Darlington side at Belle Vue. The tie has to be played by 8 November, venue to be confirmed. Darlo Reserves are playing their games at Norton & Stockton Ancients this season so it is expected to be there, but there is an added complication in that Norton also have a home tie, against Tow Law.

Four games, four wins and 19 goals. Probably the kind of response Ken Lindoe wanted after the jarring home defeat to Bishop Auckland a fortnight ago. The Steelmen continued their great recent run with a 4-0 win away at a chilly Seaham Red Star. Jonjo Dickman set the ball rolling in the 4th minute, drilling a low shot into bottom corner from just outside box. Consett had to wait until a minute before half time to add to their tally though when David Pounder's 30 yard strike dipped over the keeper, clipping the underside of the bar on the way in. The Steelmen made the game safe with two Steven Johnson goals in as many minutes early in the second half. First he finished coolly to convert Dickman's inviting ball across goal on 55 minutes, then he had the easiest of finishes after Chris Scott's 35 yard screamer had cannoned back off both posts. The win sees Consett move up into second place in the league, a point behind leaders Billingham Synthonia.

15 goals in a week for the Steelmen, as the phrase "Consett 5" appeared on the scoresheet for the third time in 8 days. Today it was Bedlington Terriers on the receiving end at Welfare Park, however once again Consett had to go a goal behind before they woke from their slumbers. Dodsworth put the home side ahead three minutes before the end of a poor first half, however - with some choice words from Mr Lindoe no doubt ringing in their ears - Consett came out after the break and scored three in six minutes. First Mattie Moffat scored on 50 minutes, but then limped off injured, however his replacement Adam Emson made an immediate impact scoring one goal and forcing an own goal from Milne to make it 3-1 by the 56th minute. Ludlow pulled one back for the Terriers, however within a minute Gary Ormston had restored Consett's two goal advantage. Jonjo Dickman added the fifth on 71 minutes meaning that on four trips to Bedlington in just over a year (including once to play Ashington) the Steelemen have scored an incredible 22 goals.

Some news updates. Firstly on the transfer front, John Clark has been transferred to Dunston Federation and Andrew Thompson, still technically registered as a Consett player as far as the Northern League were concerned, has signed for Sunderland Nissan. Also some fixture news - the date for our League Cup tie at Penrith has now been confirmed as Tuesday 28 October, and not Wednesday 29, as previously announced.

15 October 2008

Consett progressed through to the 2nd Round of the Durham Challenge Cup with a comfortable 5-1 home win over Wearside Leaguers Newton Aycliffe. The Steelmen were given an early shock however, when Mark Wood gave the visitors an 11th minute lead. A David Pounder free kick levelled things midway through the first half though, and Carl Heiniger, making his first Consett start, made it 2-1 just before the break. It was a more dominant performance by Consett after the interval, with Steven Johnson scoring with a deflected shot five minutes into the second half, and getting a second fifteen minutes from time to make it 4-1. Heiniger crowned a good all-round display with the fifth on 87 minutes, capitalising on a poor clearance from Aycliffe keeper Richardson.

Consett made a welcome return to winning ways today with a fine 5-2 win over near neighbours Ryton. The Steelmen made a blistering start, taking a 3-0 lead in the first 22 minutes. First Mattie Moffat's deflected shot (pictured above) on 14 minutes opened the scoring, then Carl Piecha's towering header 60 seconds later doubled the advantage. When Andrew Cuthbertson made it three it seemed game over, but a Marc Walton penalty on the stroke of half time brought Ryton back into the game. Steven Jones pulled it back to 3-2 five minutes into the second half to give Consett the jitters, but Piecha's second on 58 minutes put the Steelmen two in front again. When Consett were awarded a somewhat fortunate penalty two minutes later Piecha stepped up in search of his hat trick but his spot kick was well saved by Starford. Jonjo Dickman's free kick ten minutes from time completed the scoring. Match report and pictures to follow.

8 October 2008

A shocking result for Consett tonight as they went down 0-2 at home to bottom of the league Bishop Auckland. The Two Blues in the process increased their points tally for the season by 150 per cent! After a goalless first half, Amar Purewal put the visitors ahead on the hour mark. Things went from bad to worse when Gary Ormston was sent off four minutes later. Gavin Barton added a second three minutes from time to round off a miserable evening for the Steelmen.

The draws were made today for both the 1st Round of the Durham Challenge Cup and the 2nd Round of the FA Vase. Consett came out of both quite favourably, being drawn at home to lower league opposition in both competitions. In the County Cup we will entertain Newton Aycliffe of the Wearside League in a tie to be played before 18 October, and thus probably on Wednesday 15 October 2008. In the Vase we are at home to Marske United of Northern League Division Two. That tie will be played at Belle Vue on Saturday 15 November 2008.

4 October 2008

A very disappointing defeat for the Steelmen today as they lost 0-2 at struggling Northallerton Town. A win today combined with a slip up by Billingham Synthonia would have seen us go top of the league, however that never looked likely as a misfiring Consett were punished by the hard-working North Yorkshiremen who, prior to today, had collected just 6 points from 12 league games. In rotten conditions, the only goal of a poor first half came when John Ryan beat the Consett offside trap to round Josh Moody and score. The goal came in the fourth minute of SEVEN added on at the end of the first half by eccentric referee Jack Traynor - despite neither trainer having been on the pitch and no substitutions being made. Ten minutes into the second half Ryan got his and Northallerton's second, capitalising on a mix-up between defender Mark Gaffney and keeper Moody. Town ended the game with ten men when Ryan was harshly sent off for an altercation with Jonjo Dickman - the incident occurring so far into second half stoppage time that the crowd had given up looking at their watches.

Consett moved up to fourth place in the table winning 4-2 at Shildon in a real game of two halves.  Consett were poor in the first half and Shildon deservedly led at the interval, Keegan scoring after 12 minutes.  It was a different story after the break though, and on 50 minutes Mattie Moffat intercepted a back pass and rounded the keeper to level. Moffat added his second nine minutes later, shooting under the keeper.  David Pounder scored with a 20 yard shot for his first goal of the season to make it 3-1 with 10 minutes left. Three minutes later Moffat completed his hat trick, although Byrne reduced the arrears with two minutes to go. A good result then and an outstanding performance by Mattie Moffat in the second half, our best player by a mile.
