With temperatures having plummetted to -4° last night it comes as no surprise that today's home game against West Allotment Celtic has been POSTPONED due to a frozen pitch.

Adam Emson's rich vein of scoring form continued as he scored all Consett's goals for the second game running. This time it was all three in a 3-0 home win over Ashington which ensured Consett consolidate their lead at the top of the Northern League.

Cast your mind back, if you will, way way back to February 1990. Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, Nelson Mandela had just been released from prison, Sinead O'Connor was topping the charts with Nothing Compares 2 U .... and Consett last managed a win at Billingham Synthonia. Well that 18-year hoodoo was finally put to rest in emphatic style today as the Steelmen ran out 4-0 winners at a bitterly cold Central Avenue. It was all the more remarkable a win given that Consett had to do without the services of leading scorers Mattie Moffat and Steven Johnson, as well as their suspended skipper Jonjo Dickman. It was, however, a personal triumph for Adam Emson who scored all four goals. He found the net as early as the 3rd minute slotting home from a tight angle, and then added a second on 24 minutes (pictured above) finishing well after collecting a Chris Scott free kick. Emson then capitalised on goalkeeping error in the first minute of the second half to complete his hat trick, and was on hand to complete a superb move nine minutes from time, following good work from Andy Cuthbertson and Gary Ormston. It was a truly impressive performance from whole team however, with Emson and David Pounder also striking the woodwork, and the score was certainly a fair reflection on the game.

There is to be no repeat of last season's FA Vase heroics for Consett this year. In marked contrast to the six game run to the last 16 that the Steelmen enjoyed in 2007-08, this time around their Vase campaign was done and dusted inside a disappointing 90 minutes at Belle Vue going down 0-1 at home to Second Division promotion hopefuls Marske United. The only goal of the game came in the 72 minute when Stephen Gamble made a run down the left and played the ball to the unmarked Jonathan Newton who wasted no time firing past Consett keeper Paul Gilmore.

Consett maintained their position at the top of the Northern League with a hard-fought 4-2 win at Billingham Town this evening. Despite winning just three league games so far this season, Billingham were no pushovers and took the lead in the 4th minute through Alexander. Michael Couthard levelled the scores on 19 minutes and a Steven Johnson penalty on the half hour mark made it 2-1 to the Steelmen. The sides went in at half time level though as Burton equalised in the last minute of the first half. It was still 2-2 with 15 minutes remaining when Mattie Moffat was introduced to the fray. Within three minutes his cross shot led to the Carling own goal that put Consett ahead again, and Johnson's second of the match in stoppage time made the points safe.

The Consett roller-coaster continued on its merry way today as the Steelmen ran out comfortable 4-1 winners at home to a strong Whitley Bay side. Even within this 90 minutes, Consett's following were treated to a bit of everything as for the first half an hour they were a distant second best to their visitors who scored first through Bruce Hogg on 25 minutes. That acted like an alarm clock for Consett who suddenly woke up, and from the moment Carl Piecha found the net from a goalmouth scramble after 36 minutes there was only going to be one winner. Adam Emson fired home the second two minutes before the break (pictured above) and also scored a fine third in the 71st minute after being played through by a delightful ball from Steven Johnson. Johnson himself scored a solo breakaway goal in the last minute to round off the scoring and ensure Consett went back to the top of the Northern League.

Consett's infuriatingly inconsistent season continued with a poor performance and a surprise defeat to a Chester-le-Street side floundering in the lower reaches of Northern League Division One. Things looked promising when Steven Johnson pounced on a blocked Jonjo Dickman shot to fire Consett into an 18th minute lead. However the wheels fell off dramatically as the Steelmen fell 1-4 behind. First Craig Price drilled home a low shot after 31 minutes, then an unmarked Rob Draper put the Cestrians ahead with a near post glancing header. Man of the match Ibrahim Hassan converted the third although he didn't seem to know much about the miscued shot that hit him before bouncing in. Price converted a 79th minute penalty for Chester's fourth, although Johnson pulled one back three minutes later from the tightest of angles to make the scoreline a little less embarrassing.
