After a two week lay off because of bad weather Consett got back into action with a visit to title rivals Nissan, and The Steelmen stretched their lead at the top of the table to ten points with an impressive win over the second placed Motormen.

Manager Kenny Lindoe made one change to the side that had beaten Ashington a fortnight earlier, Jonjo Dickman replacing the unavailable Andy Cuthbertson.

Consett were the better side from the off and created most of the chances in the opening half. They almost took the lead after six minutes when Chris Scott’s corner was headed goalwards by Michael Coulthard but the ball was headed off the line by a defender.

But a minute later the visitors did take the lead. Following a short corner, Scott floated a cross to the far post where Coulthard took advantage of hesitancy in the home rearguard and touched the ball home from close range.

On the quarter hour Craig Robson shot narrowly wide from 25 yards as Consett continued to dominate. Two minutes later David Pounder’s long range effort was tipped over the bar by Newton.

Newton was called into action again midway through the half when he claimed the ball at the feet of Adam Emson who had run onto a throughball.

The Steelmen almost doubled their advantage after 38 minutes when Dickman’s free-kick deflected off of a defender and onto the post and was cleared. Two minutes on and Emson had a shot deflected for a corner after a good run.

For forty minutes little was seen of the home side as an attacking force but they created two excellent chances in as many minutes as the interval approached.

Following a good move, Banks got in on goal but Paul Gilmore made an excellent save, diving to his left to turn round the post. A minute later a clever back heel by Banks put Robinson in the clear but he shot narrowly wide of the upright.

Half time: Nissan 0-1 Consett

There were few chances in the early minutes of the second half, with an Emson shot from 18 yards that went wide the only noteworthy effort from either side.

Consett introduced Mattie Moffat from the subs bench after 66 minutes and two minutes later he almost got on the scoresheet. After running onto a ball forward he cut inside a defender to leave himself with only Newton to beat but his shot was too close to the keeper who made a comfortable save.

But after 72 minutes a good move brought Consett the all important second goal. Emson made a run down the Consett left, played the ball in to Dickman who in turn squared the ball into the danger zone where Moffat slid in to poke the ball home.

Nissan briefly threatened when Banks’ shot from the edge of the area drifted wide. But with nine minutes to go Consett added a third. Again it was a move down the Consett left that led to the goal. Pounder played the ball to Emson who cut the ball back from the by-line for Robson to smash home from 6 yards.

Nissan scored what proved to be little more than a consolation with six minutes left. Banks’ shot from 25 yards going in off the post despite Gilmore getting a hand to the ball.
