29 July 2008

Consett's last pre-season friendly, which is away to Annfield Plain has been put back 24 hours and will now take place on Tuesday 5 August 2008, kick off 7.00pm.

28 July 2008

In tonight's hastily arranged friendly, Consett played host to a youthful Darlington FC X1 with the teams producing an entertaining 2-2 draw. Again Consett had the better of the opening period and took the lead just before the half hour when youngster Joe Craig shot home following a corner. Craig was in the action again when his fine pass gave Brown the opportunity to double the home advantage ten minutes before the interval, Brown calmly rounding the stranded keeper. Consett could have added to their lead early in the second half when Craig Robson’s effort hit the woodwork, with Clark and Cuthbertson also having chances. But Darlington pulled one back after 64 minutes when Gray’s cross from the by-line was headed home by Groves. Then with 15 minutes to go the visitors claimed a draw when after Groves’ shot had hit the post Mateland put in the rebound.

Consett's pre-season preparations continued when The Steelmen made the short trip to Esh Winning but lost 3-2 after being two up at one stage. Consett dominated the first period and took the lead after 29 minutes when Clark shot past the advancing keeper following Steven Brown’s throughball. They doubled their advantage ten minutes later when Andy Cuthbertson was felled in the box and Brown made no mistake from the penalty spot. But Esh pulled one back on the stroke of half time through Megran. Both teams hit the woodwork in the second period before the home side levelled when Thompson headed home with 15 minutes to go. The winner came with three minutes left when Marshall forced his way through the defence to shoot home.

22 July 2008

In the second of their pre-season games, Consett achieved a creditable 1-1 draw against a Hartlepool United side that included former Consett favourite Michael Mackay. After a goalless first half which the visitors edged, Pool took the lead after 54 minutes when the ball was deflected home by Young. But Consett hit back and almost levelled just after the hour when Steven Johnson’s effort struck the post. With nine minutes to go, however, Consett got a deserved equaliser when Johnson tapped the ball home following John Clark’s corner.

19 July 2008

Consett began their preparations for the new season with an emphatic 8-1 victory over Prudhoe Town at Belle Vue Park. The Steelmen were shocked into action after the visitors took a surprise lead after only 40 seconds following a free-kick. The home side were soon in their stride, however, and went close twice through new signing Adam Emson before they levelled the scores on 24 minutes. John Clark put in a fine cross from the left which took a slight deflection before being headed home by Emson. Steven Brown made it 2-1 eight minutes later when he broke through the defence, wrong footed the keeper and slotted home. Four minutes before the interval, The Steelmen, made it three when Brown’s long ball fell perfectly for Jonjo Dickman who drew the keeper before finishing with ease. The goals came thick and fast in the early minutes of the second period. Steve Johnson got his name on the scoresheet when he combined with Emson and fired the ball under the advancing keeper after 54 minutes. Three minutes later Johnson struck again to make it 5-1 when he ran onto a throughball and shot past the helpless keeper. It was six just after the hour when from Johnson’s cross Emson directed the ball goalwards but the finishing touch was applied by a defender in his attempt to clear. Youngster Joe Craig made an impact after coming on as a substitute and his pass left Johnson with just a tap in to complete his hat-trick. The scoring was completed with six minutes to go when Craig was felled in the box and Brown made no mistake from the spot.

Consett AFC are pleased to announce that Premier Insurance are to replace the Hargreaves Group as the club’s main sponsor. The three year deal with Hargreaves concluded at the end of last season and Premier Insurance of Victoria Road, Consett have agreed a two year deal to replace them. Club Chairman, John Hurst said, “We are extremely grateful to Hargreaves for their financial support for the last three years but they have decided to move on, so we are delighted to have found a new sponsor in the shape of Premier Insurance. We look forward to forging a mutually beneficial relationship with them over the coming months.” Gary Milburn of Premier Insurance said, “We are proud to sponsor Consett AFC and are in it for the long haul”. The club has also agreed deals with Giles Hunter Partnership to sponsor the training tops and Specsure Opticians to sponsor the tracksuits. Negotiations are ongoing with other potential sponsors.

The date has now been set for Consett's League Cup 1st Round tie away to Penrith Town, which will take place in Cumbria on Tuesday 16 September 2008.

10 July 2008

Consett's pre-season schedule has now been finalised with the addition of friendlies against Prudhoe Town, Birtley Town and Annfield Plain. This means that the full list of Consett's pre-season games looks like this:

Sat 19 July Prudhoe Town H 3.00pm
Tue 22 July Hartlepool United H 7.00pm
Fri 25 July Esh Winning A 7.30pm
Sat 2 August Birtley Town A 3.00pm
Mon 4 August Annfield Plain A 7.00pm
Wed 20 August Sunderland H 7.30pm

... although technically the Sunderland game isn't a pre-season friendly as we'll have already played four competitive matches by then.

In transfer news, following the signing of Andrew Cuthbertson, Consett have now signed striker Adam Emson. Given that Consett operated for most of last season with just the two regular strikers, Emson, scorer of 24 goals for Shildon last season, provides some much-needed competition and cover up front. Outgoing is Andrew Thompson who has re-signed for Whitby Town.

The draws were made today for the FA competitions and in the FA Cup we make an early start as we are in action in the Extra Preliminary round on Saturday 16 August 2008. We have been drawn at home to Pontefract Collieries in an exact replica (same round, same opponents) of a fixture from 2002-03 season. For the record, Consett won that one 4-1. If we win that tie we travel to either Bishop Auckland or Darlington Railway Athletic in the Preliminary Round two weeks later. Should we then progress to the 1st Qualifying Round we will have a home tie against North Ferriby United of the Unibond Premier Division on Saturday 13 September.

In the FA Vase things are rather more straightforward. All teams that played in the 4th round of last season's competition (we, of course, reached the 5th) receive a bye to the 2nd Round this season. That takes place on Saturday 15 November 2008, although the draw hasn't been made that far in advance.
