August 2008 News

31 August 2008

Consett were held to a 3-3 draw by Bishop Auckland in today's FA Cup Preliminary Round tie. In what was possibly Consett’s first ever Sunday game, the Steelmen cruised into a 3-0 lead, only to then fritter it away in alarming fashion. The only goal of a disappointing first half came courtesy of a Paul Moss own goal (pictured above). However Consett were three up by the 54th minute, Mattie Moffat converting Adam Emson's cross 24 seconds into the second half, and Chris Douglas almost ripping the net off after a Moffat attempt had been blocked. That seemed to be game over against a Bishop side who up to that point didn’t appear to have a goal in them, let alone three. However Gavin Parkin scored twice to peg it back to 3-2 with nine minutes left. A twitchy Consett must have sensed safety when the home side were reduced to ten men in the 85th minute, ex-Steelman Gus Di Lella seeing a second yellow for a dangerous lunge. The ten minute levelled the scores though in the fourth minute of stoppage time through Lee Ellison to set up a replay at Belle Vue on Wednesday night.

Just a quick reminder that tomorrow's FA Cup tie away to Bishop Auckland takes place at their temporary residence for this season, which is Darlington Road, the home of West Auckland Town.

Consett's recent rotten record at Dunston Fed continued with a 0-2 defeat this evening. It's over five years since we even scored at this ground, let alone got a point, and from the moment Kane Young headed the home side into a 12th minute lead it was clear that this game wasn't going to reverse the trend. Carl Heiniger capitalised on a defensive mix-up to make it 2-0 on the stroke of half time. Consett improved in the second half but rarely tested the keeper, meaning that the Steelmen suffered their second defeat in four days.

Consett's 100% start to the season came to an abrupt end as they surprisingly went down 2-3 at home to Morpeth Town. The Steelmen conceded a fifth minute goal to Chris Philipson but Steven Johnson levelled soon afterwards. Alex Benjamin restored Morpeth's advantage only for Johnson to peg the vistors back again with his second of the game. Just before the end Ian Herron scored the winner curling the ball in from the edge of the area.

In tonight's friendly match at Belle Vue, a crowd of over 300, saw a strong Sunderland squad, with the likes of internationals Dwight Yorke, Graham Kavanagh and Russell Anderson, run out 5-1 winners against Consett. It was goalless for 40 minutes but Dowson headed Sunderland into a half time 1-0 lead. Two goals in the first five minutes of the second half, scored by Cook and Dowson, put Sunderland in total control. Cook made it 4-0 after 65 minutes when he headed home a Kavanagh cross. Consett pulled one back in the 82nd minute when triallist Foli Shekoni, who had played for Sunderland at Consett last season, converted from the penalty spot. Sunderland added a fifth with five minutes to go, Kavanagh’s right wing corner being powerfully headed home by Madden

In this afternoon's FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie, Bishop Auckland beat Darlington Railway Athletic 3-2 to set up a Preliminary Round meeting with Consett. As you may be aware, Bishops are ground-sharing this season with West Auckland Town, and because West have also been drawn at home (to Durham City) in the Preliminary Round, our game against Bishop Auckland will take place at Darlington Road on Sunday 31 August 2008, kick off 3.00pm. Admittance is £5.00, or £2.50 for concessions.

Turning to more imminent events, a reminder that Consett entertain a Sunderland XI in a friendly match at Belle Vue on this coming Wednesday, 20 August 2008. Kick off is at 7.30pm, not 7.00 as has been widely reported.

16 August 2008

Consett progressed to the Preliminary Round of this season's FA Cup, coming from behind to beat Pontefract Collieries 5-1 at Belle Vue. The Steelmen paid the price for a sluggish start when the visitors took a shock lead after 33 minutes, Gareth Burton following up to score after Paul Gilmore had pulled off a brilliant save from a deflected free kick. Gary Ormston levelled things three minutes before half time after latching on to an Andrew Cuthbertson cross (pictured above). The second half was pretty much one way traffic, with Mattie Moffat converting Adam Emson's cross after 54 minutes to put Consett ahead. Karl Baston scored his first Consett goal on 74 minutes to make it 3-1 and Moffat raced clear to score his second five minutes later. Consett went nap when Steven Brown jabbed a loose ball home from 12 yards three minutes into stoppage time.

13 August 2008

Two wins out of two for Consett and the second 3-1 home win in four days as the Steelmen came out on top in their contest with local rivals Tow Law Town. Consett took the lead as early as the 5th minute when Steven Brown volleyed home Gary Ormston's cross. On 19 minutes Steven Johnson made it two, following up to score after Mattie Moffat's shot had been cleared off the line. Moffat himself made it 3-0 inside half an hour racing through to beat the keeper from Cuthbertson's through ball. In highly entertaining game it was a surprise that the only further scoring after that came in the 57th minute when Chris Renshaw's speculative 35 yarder founded the bottom corner to pull one back for the Lawyers.

9 August 2008

Consett got their 2008-09 Northern League campaign off to a winning start with a 3-1 opening day win over newly-promoted Penrith. Last season's League top scorer Mattie Moffat immediately picked up where he left off by netting all three. The Steelmen took the lead on 28 minutes when Moffat bundled home Steven Johnson's parried shot from close range. They doubled their advantage six minutes into the second half, Moffat scooping the ball home from a tight angle after Jonjo Dickman had flicked on Gary Ormston's cross. Consett appeared to be cruising, but they were in for a nervous finale when a freak Ormston own goal handed the visitors a lifeline. The points were made safe in the last minute though, when Moffat dispossesed Penrith skipper Mark Jones to coolly complete his hat trick.

5 August 2008

In their final pre-season friendly Consett played out a 0-0 draw away at near neighbours Annfield Plain of the Wearside League. The scoreline only really tells half the story though as the Steelmen put together a simply astonishing catalogue of missed chances that in all seriousness could have seen the score in double figures. Consett named the following starting line-up: Gilmore, Coulthard, Baston, Dickman, Gaffney, Cuthbertson, Ormston, Brown, Moffat, Emson, Clark. They struck the woodwork twice, with Steven Brown hitting the inside of the post in the 40th minute and Adam Emson crashing a shot against the bar 18 minutes into the second half. Mattie Moffat also saw an attempt from fully 50 yards saved by the keeper scrambling back into his goal. Aside from that, I noted down other chances for Emson (5), Ormston (3), Moffat (2), Dickman (2), Brown, Piecha and Clark. It wasn't all one way traffic though as Gilmore was called upon to save a second half free kick, and then made a brave save at the feet of an attacker just as the referee was about to blow for full time to ensure Consett didn't suffer a shock defeat.

2 August 2008

The Steelmen continued their impressive pre-season form with a comfortable 3-0 win at second division Birtley Town. After Jonjo Dickman and Steven Brown had seen early efforts deflected wide, Consett took the lead six minutes before half time when Steven Johnson beat the offside trap, broke down right, and squared to Brown who slotted the ball past the keeper (pictured above). Consett doubled their lead five minutes into the second half when Dickman flicked on Mark Patterson's cross and Gary Ormston drove the ball home. The third came on 58 minutes, John Clark made a great run down the left before playing the ball into Johnson who made a strong run into box and shot across the keeper. Debutant Karl Baston made his first appearance in a Consett shirt in the following line-up: Gilmore, Gaffney, Ewart, Dickman, Baston, Cuthbertson, Ormston, Brown, Patterson, Johnson, Clark. They played unchanged for the first 70 minutes before a group of young players were given a run out in the closing stages.
