It was more trick than treat for Consett fans as the Steelmen were dumped out of the League Cup in a Hallowe'en horror show from a Consett side that seemed inexplicably out of sorts and unrecognisable from the team that wiped the floor with league leaders Durham the previous week.
The early exchanges were even with Thomas Louden shooting straight at Platten for West and the Consett’s Mark Patterson volleying a poor clearance back towards goal forcing West keeper Hutton to tip the ball round the post.

From then on though the game became a poor contest with a bumpy pitch and a blustery wind not helping the spectacle. Steelmen Dickman and Ormston had goal attempts that were well off target, before Louden teed up Dale Jardine who should have put West in front but dragged his shot wide.

The only goal of the game came eight minutes before half time as West's Danny Richmond latched on to a Dale Jardine flick on and slammed it past James Platten in the Consett goal.
Half Time: Consett 0-1 West
Mattie Moffat came closest to levelling for Consett when he headed David Pounder’ free kick against the bar in the 56th minute. From then on though Consett never seriously threatened the visitors’ goal and if anything it was West that had the better of things.
On 59 minutes a slip by Gaffney left West with a 3 v 2 situation but Bryan Stewart shot straight at the keeper. Then three minutes later Stewart and Jardine combined to set up Scott Nicholson, whose low drive was saved well by Platten. The busy Consett stopper was in action again in the 69th minute making an excellent one-handed save from Stewart. |
Consett produced their best move of the match 12 minutes from time, but Moffat was unable to apply the finshing touch to Clark’s cross. West though were never in any serious danger and held on with relative ease for the win, which could have been greater but for Gary Ormston’s.goal-saving tackle which denied West’s Player-Manager Lee Ellison in the final minute of the game.
Full Time: Consett 0-1 West
