End Of Season Poll 2007/08

Results

All the votes have been counted so here are the results of the Seventh Annual consettafc.com Readers Poll.  A good response although again not quite as big as our gates this season might have suggested.  Thanks to those who took part though, and here, once again without a gold envelope in sight, are the results:

Player of the Season
1 : MATTIE MOFFAT
2 : Carl Piecha
3 : Steven Brown

2006/07 - 1 : MICHAEL MACKAY, 2 : Gary Ormston, 3 : Jonjo Dickman
2005/06 - 1 : STEVEN BROWN, 2 : David Johnson, 3 : Gary Ormston
2004/05 - 1 : JEFF SUGDEN, 2 : Lee Suddes, 3 : James Platten
2003/04 - 1 : MICHAEL PITT, 2 : Jeff Sugden, 3 : James Platten
2002/03 - 1 : DARREN GRIMES, 2 : Jeff Sugden, 3 : Colin McLeod
2001/02 - 1 : JAMES PLATTEN, 2 = : Rod Butler & Colin McLeod

This was a fiercely contested category with five serious contenders but Mattie Moffat's phenomenal goalscoring exploits saw him crowned as the seventh different winner of this award. Carl Piecha's consistent displays at the back were rewarded with second place, which he claimed by just one point from cult hero Steven Brown, who specialised this season in scoring vital cup goals.

Most Promising Newcomer
1 : JOHN CLARK
2 : Michael Coulthard
3 : Mattie Moffat

2006/07 - 1 : IAN ROBSON, 2 : Jonjo Dickman, 3 : Craig Robson
2005/06 - 1 : CARL PIECHA, 2 : Alan Oliver, 3 : Steven Brown
2004/05 - 1 : ROBBIE BLEMINGS, 2 : Mark Turner, 3 : Ben Thompson
2003/04 - 1 : MICHAEL PITT, 2 : Paul Terrell, 3= : Paul Curry & Andrew Morgan
2002/03 - 1 : STEVE SMITH, 2 : Andrew Green, 3 : Greg Scott
2001/02 - 1 : NEIL LOWDON, 2 : Andrew Thompson, 3 : Roy Gordon

Again this category proved something of a dilemma as the continued absence of any conventional "Young Players" from the squad led to many votes going to relatively experienced players who were merely in their first season at the club. Two such players being Michael Coulthard and Mattie Moffat, who took second and third places respectively. The winner though was lively left winger John Clark who was something of a supersub this season making 28 appearances from the bench in addition to his six starts.

2001/02 - 1 : HALLIDAY - v Whitley Bay (H), 2 : Butler - v Bedlington (A), 3 : Davison - v Brandon (A)

Spoilt for choice once again in this category with 153 goals to choose from, although there was a fair degree of unanimity about the winner. Patta's superb volley which was the second in our 3-0 midweek league win at Durham City won fairly comfortably in the end. A couple of free kicks took second and third places. David Pounder's magnificent left-foot curler into the top corner that put us 4-2 up in extra time at Merstham just shaded Steven Brown's to force a replay away at Poole Town. One odd stat in this category was that the only goal scored at Belle Vue to receive a vote from anyone was John Clark's against Ossett Town in the FA Cup. A couple of people voted for "Mattie Moffat" - give us a clue lads, he only scored 56. Which one did you mean?!

Favourite Away Ground
1 : DURHAM CITY
2 : Billingham Synthonia
3 : Whitley Bay

2006/07 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2 : Billingham Synthonia, 3 : Sunderland Nissan
2005/06 - 1 : CROOK TOWN, 2 : Darlington RA, 3 : Prudhoe Town
2004/05 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2 : Whitley Bay, 3 : Billingham Synthonia
2003/04 - 1 : ASHINGTON, 2 : Crook Town, 3 : Prudhoe Town
2002/03 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2= : Whitley Bay & Billingham Synthonia
2001/02 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2 : Billingham Town, 3 : Ashington

Another win for Durham City, which means they've won it every season we've gone there for a game. The fact we won there 3-0 and 4-0 made it a particularly happy hunting ground this season, and they won this time around by an absolute mile, getting more votes than all of the other grounds put together. Obviously though with their promotion to the Unibond there will be a different winner next season. Synners finished in the top three for the fourth time, while Whitley Bay managed to get third despite the fact that we spent that visit this year cowering under the main stand to avoid getting a soaking. Bedlington just missed out by finishing fourth, aided no doubt by three big wins in our three trips to Welfare Park in the last campaign!

Top Scran (Best catering at an away ground)
1= : DURHAM CITY
1= : CHESTER-LE-STREET TOWN
3 : West Allotment Celtic

2006/07 - 1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN, 2 : Chester-le-Street Town, 3 : Durham City
2005/06 - 1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN, 2 : Darlington RA, 3 : Ryton
2004/05 - 1 : HORDEN CW, 2 : Durham City, 3= : Whitley Bay & Chester-le-Street Town
2003/04 - 1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN, 2 : Seaham Red Star, 3= : Whickham & Willington
2002/03 - 1 : WHITLEY BAY, 2= : Dunston Fed, Shildon & Newcastle Blue Star
2001/02 - no result, new category

Surprisingly no place for three time winners Northallerton this year. Instead we had a tie for first place between Durham City and Chester-le-Street Town, whose bacon sarnies remain as good as ever. West Allotment got a deserved third with a post-match spread that would put most wedding receptions to shame!

Highlight/Funniest Moment of the Season:

This isn't really a category as such, more just an opportunity to share any funny stories or experiences accrued over the season.  Quite a few highlights this season, mostly relating to the FA Vase run. The replay against Poole Town, and the big gates at that and the Workington game got a mention. As did beating Durham 4-0 in the Vase. In terms of specific incidents, Mattie Moffat launching himself head first over the barriers and into the Consett fans at Merstham, cleaning out a couple of them on the way down, got a few votes. All the more ironic given that as hadn't actually scored the goal! If it went on number of votes it would have tied with Steven Brown's comedy goalkeeping performance at home to Bedlington Terriers. Well we can laugh now I suppose!!

Many thanks to you all for participating and here's hoping 2008-09 brings that elusive league title.
