It was more trick than treat for Consett fans this evening as the Steelmen were dumped out of the League Cup at the 2nd Round stage, losing at home 0-1 to West Auckland Town. It was real Hallowe'en horror show from a Consett side that seemed inexplicably out of sorts and unrecognisable from the team that wiped the floor with league leaders Durham last week. The only goal of the game came eight minutes before half time as West's Danny Richmond latched on to a Dale Jardine flick on and slammed it past James Platten in the Consett goal. Mattie Moffat came closest to levelling when he headed against the bar early in the second half but West were never in any serious danger and held on with relative ease for the win. The Consett juggernaut keeps on rolling with another win and another clean sheet this afternoon. The Steelmen registered a comfortable 3-0 victory against Washington which makes it eleven unbeaten in the league now, with wins in last four. The eighth consecutive league shut-out extends the period since Gavin Cogden scored his and Nissan's third in the 3-3 draw at Belle Vue in early September to 754 minutes. A tight and almost action-free first half looked like ending goalless until Steven Johnson broke down the left and crossed for strike partner Mattie Moffat to convert with a stooping header. Johnson got on the scoresheet himself on 74 minutes, heading home Gary Ormston's cross from close range. Moffat made it three in the last minute heading home another Johnson cross. Durham City's goalless draw with Billingham Synthonia means that Consett are just one point behind the leaders in second place. Match report and pictures HERE. |

A tremendous result for Consett tonight as they went to the home of league leaders Durham City, who had previously dropped only two points all season, and came away with a mightily impressive 3-0 win. Mattie Moffat set the ball rolling, sliding in to convert a David Pounder cross in the 7th minute (pictured above). Mark Patterson's thunderbolt volley three minutes after the interval doubled the Steelmen's advantage, and then a sweeping move two minutes later ended with Steven Johnson racing on to Moffat's pinpoint cross to drill home Consett's third. The clean sheet means that Consett have now gone 664 minutes of league football without conceding a goal. Match report and pictures now online. |

Consett kept their sixth consecutive clean sheet in the league as they came away from their longest trip of the season with a comfortable 2-0 win over Northallerton Town. Both goals were scored in the opening 17 minutes, Steven Johnson delicately lifted the ball over the goalkeeper (pictured above) to open the scoring in the eighth minute. Then good link-up work between Johnson and Mattie Moffat led to Moffat sending a superb 30-yard dipping volley crashing into the net. Dickman and Moffat both hit the bar early in the second half but despite numerous chances and an incredible amount of possession the Steelmen were unable to add to their tally. In today's Durham Challenge Cup 2nd Round draw Consett were drawn at home to local rivals Tow Law Town. This extends Consett's remarkable record of home draws in this competition, as apart from last year's final played at the neutral ground Nissan, we've played 8 of our last 9 Durham Challenge Cup ties at home. The tie will almost certainly be played on Wednesday 7 November 2007.

An entertaining evening at Belle Vue tonight as a Consett Select XI drew with a Consett Old Boys XI 2-2 in James Platten's Testimonial match. Michael Mackay, now of course of Hartlepool United, made a cameo appearance to kick the game off. The Old Boys opened the scoring after 24 minutes through Alan Batey, who had only been on the field 30 seconds. David Pounder equalised for the current side 11 minutes later, having earlier hit the post. Tony Halliday put the Old Boys in front again just after half time, but mid-way through the second half former manager Jon King, guesting for the current squad made it 2-2 with a shot that just about had enough pace on it to cross the line! Pounder, who by then was playing in goal, denied the Old Boys a famous victory six minutes from time, making a point blank save from Colin McLeod. All in all a very successful and memorable evening. The teams for the record were:
Select XI: Ian Archbold, Rob Story, David Hagan, Jonjo Dickman, Carl Piecha, Michael Coulthard, David Robson, Craig Robson, Jon King, David Pounder, John Clark. Subs: Mark Gaffney, John Ewart, Mark Patterson.
Old Boys: James Platten, Robbie Blemings, Ian Davison, Johnny Brown, Jeff Sugden, David Bayles, Lee Suddes, Andrew Thompson, Colin McLeod, Tony Halliday, Darren Grimes. Subs: Mark Outterside, Alan Colledge, John Dodds, Steven Brown, Rod Butler, Alan Batey, Gary Best.

Consett cruised into the 2nd Round of the Durham Challenge Cup with a 7-0 win over second division Sunderland Ryhope CA. It was a big night for James Platten who, on the eve of his testimonial, made his 350th appearance for Consett, and celebrated by keeping his fourth clean sheet from four starts this season. At the other end there was a hat-trick for Mattie Moffat taking his tally to 17 for the season, two for David Pounder (pictured above scoring Consett's fifth), and goals for Gary Ormston and John Ewart. Another win and another clean sheet for Consett this afternoon as they kept up the pressure at the top of the table with an excellent 3-0 win over Shildon. Mattie Moffat opened the scoring in the 35th minute, heading home Gary Ormston's cross (pictured above). The Steelmen made the game safe with two goals in three minutes midway through the second half. Steven Johnson scored after some brilliant interplay with his striker partner Moffat after 68 minutes, then Jonjo Dickman sent a free kick into the top corner to make it 3-0. There was fine performances all over the park, however the side was underpinned by an immense, some might say Sugden-esque, performance by Carl Piecha in the centre of defence. Match report here. |

Goalless at Spennymoor this evening as the Steelmen came away from a tricky away game with a 0-0 draw. Moors had won all ten games they'd played at Brewery Field this season, so it was no mean achievement for Consett to come away with a point, and in doing so they extended their impressive run of clean sheets - this being the fifth in their last six league games. Consett came closest to scoring when Mattie Moffat's towering header (pictured above) cannoned back off the crossbar nine minutes from time. Adam Johnston clipped the same crossbar for Moors in the first hallf and on the balance of play a draw was about fair. Match report and pictures now online. |

Today's FA Vase 2nd Round draw was particularly unkind to Consett as we were presented with a trip to Durham City on Saturday 17 November 2007. It's a rotten draw really as both sides would have fancied their chances of a good run in this competition, and in our case, as happened in the FA Cup, it's about as tough a draw as we could get at this stage.

Consett stormed into the 2nd Round of the FA Vase with a stunning 7-1 win at Arngrove Northern League Division One rivals Bedlington Terriers. Leading at half time through a 36th minute strike from David Pounder, the Steelmen blitzed their hosts with six second half goals. Two from Mattie Moffat, two from Steven Johnson after coming on as a substitute, plus a Steven Brown penalty and a first Consett goal for Mark Gaffney left the Terriers reeling. Alex Benjamin's netted Bedlington's consolation when the score 5-0. Match report and pictures HERE. |
