November 2007 News

24 November 2007

Consett’s 14 game unbeaten league run came to an abrupt halt with a 2-4 defeat at the home of last season’s runners-up Billingham Town. Steve Huggins put the home side ahead from the penalty spot after 18 minutes and Nathan Jameson made it two six minutes later.  Either side of those goals however Gary Ormston hit the post and Mark Gaffney headed against the bar as the Steelmen went in at half time unfortunate to be 0-2 down.  Things went from bad to worse after the break though as Craig Robson was sent off, and Jameson went on to complete his hat trick and extend Town's lead to four.  Ten-man Consett kept going to the end though, and late goals from Mattie Moffat and Steven Johnson gave the score a more respectable look.  The defeat saw The Steelmen's lead at the top of the Arngrove Northern League First Division table cut to two points.  Match report.

In today's draw for the third round of the FA Vase Consett were handed a home draw against Trafford, who progressed on Saturday thanks to a 3-2 win at Seaham Red Star. Trafford currently stand second in North West Counties League Division One and a quick look at the table show their record in that league to be nearly identical to ours.

Some other fixture news. The league have re-scheduled a couple of our outstanding games for December. We will entertain Chester-le-Street Town on Wednesday 12 December 2007, and the following week we are at home to Bedlington Terriers - that game being scheduled for Wednesday 19 December 2007. Both are 7.30 kick offs.

A second comfortable victory on the artificial turf of Durham City inside a month ensured that Consett progressed to the 3rd Round of the FA Vase this afternoon. The 4-0 win was, if anything more impressive than the 3-0 victory in the league three and a half weeks ago. Gary Ormston set the ball rolling in the 18th minute firing into the top corner from 12 yards. Two in four minutes from Mattie Moffat before half time effectively killed the tie. The first was a fine header from Steven Johnson's cross, then a stretching volley from David Pounder's corner made it three. The tall striker completed his hat trick and took his tally for the season to 26 with a splendid 25-yard strike three minutes from time. Match report and pictures HERE.

10 November 2007

Consett extended their unbeaten record in the league to thirteen games and in the process climbed to the top of the Northern League by winning 4-2 at West Allotment Celtic. The game seemed all over within 20 minutes, by which time The Steelmen were 3-0 up. Carl Piecha headed home a David Pounder cross on 12 minutes, then Steven Brown fired in a free kick (pictured above) two minutes later to double Consett's lead. Steven Johnson beat the offside trap to make three and that was the way it stayed until half time. A harshly awarded penalty , converted by Keith Douglas, gave Celtic a lifeline six minutes after the break, but then Carl Piecha headed home his second of the game on the hour mark to restore Consett's three goal lead. Tom Vickers headed home three minutes from time to make it 4-2 but a fightback was never really on the cards. Match report and pictures now online.

A quick piece of fixture news. The league have filled one of our free Wednesdays in November by re-arranging our home game with Bishop Auckland for Wednesday 21 November 2007. Kick off at Belle Vue is 7.30 pm.

7 November 2007

Consett relinquished their hold on the Durham Challenge Cup this evening, going down 2-4 at home to local rivals Tow Law Town. It was a second home Cup defeat on successive Wednesdays for Consett, although they started well enough and took the lead through Mattie Moffat (pictured above) in the 12th minute. The Lawyers came back to take a 2-1 lead by half time, both goals scored by former Consett player Mark Eccles, the second while keeper James Platten lay injured on the edge of the area. Consett levelled just after half time, again Moffat was the scorer and again Steven Brown the provider. However two goals from Tow Law's other former Steelman - Kraig Wilkinson - gave the visitors the win and a place in the quarter-finals. Match report and pictures HERE.

3 November 2007

Consett returned to winning ways and kept up the pressure at the top of Arngrove Northern League Division One by coming from behind to beat Sunderland Nissan away. The Steelmen went behind to a 35th Minute Richard Hodgson goal, which ended their run without conceding a league goal 789 minute mark. Ironically the last team to score a league goal against Consett was Nissan back in September. John Ewart levelled the scores a minute into the second half and David Pounder grabbed the winner nine minutes from time. Consett are now unbeaten in twelve in the league. Match report now online
