A late goal saw The Steelmen pick up three more points from what was an uninspiring encounter against a team managed by former Consett boss Jon King.

Current Consett manager, Kenny Lindoe, picked the same team that had drawn against West Allotment, apart from John Ewart replacing the injured David Johnson.

Morpeth created the first opportunity of the match with Warwick volleying wide after a long ball. Consett’s Gary Ormston had a long range effort comfortably saved and then following a David Pounder corner, Carl Piecha scuffed his shot wide at the far post.

Herron shot wide from the edge of the area for the visitors after 34 minutes but a minute later Consett created the best chance of the half. Pounder’s pinpoint ball through the Morpeth defence found Dickman who was in on goal, but the midfielder’s first time shot went inches wide of the upright.

Another minute on and Consett wasted another good chance. David Colvin’s long ball forward found Mattie Moffat who had outpaced the defence but he lobbed well over as keeper Poskett came out to narrow the angle.

Half Time: Consett 0-0 Morpeth

The opening stages of the second period were uneventful and it took 24 minutes before either side looked like troubling the scorers. It was the visitors who threatened when Rue’s 20 yard effort deflected off Piecha and into the arms of Paul Gilmore.

With 15 minutes to go Rue again went close when after a free-kick he powerfully shot over from a tight angle.

Consett then suddenly came alive and they thought they had scored after 78 minutes when Ormston headed home from Steven Brown’s free-kick but the referee disallowed it for an infringement.

But the winning goal did come three minutes later. Brown’s shot deflected off of a defender, looped into the air and was headed home by Moffat from 6 yards.

In the final minute substitute Steven Johnson almost added another when his well struck shot from the edge of the area was tipped over by Poskett.

Full Time: Consett 1-0 Morpeth
