Consett registered their third 3-0 win in four games by beating bottom club Jarrow Roofing at Belle Vue this afternoon. With Whitley Bay drawing at Shildon, Consett climbed up to second place on goal difference with this victory and cannot now finish any lower than third.

Consett manager Ken Lindoe made two changes from the side that won 3-0 at Bishop Auckland. With keeper Paul Gilmore and top scorer Mattie Moffat unavailable, Andy Colling donned the gloves for only the second time this season while David Colvin was restored to the starting line-up.

It was yet another bitterly cold and windy afternoon at Belle Vue as spring still resolutely refuses to arrive in this country. Consett kicked off playing into the wind and as a consequence made little headway in a scrappy first half. In the only vague attempt at goal either side could muster in the first 25 minutes, Colvin saw a miscued cross bounce to safety off the top of the crossbar.

The visitors were presented with the best chance of the first half when in the 27th minute, Carl Piecha was deemed to have brought down Richard Logan in the area and the referee awarded Roofing a penalty. Former Consett striker Craig Tate stepped up to take the kick but was denied by a fine save from Colling.

The Steelmen were stung into action and moments later Jonjo Dickman headed wide from a Colvin free kick. Consett’s frustrations boiled over on the half hour mark when Lindoe was sent from the dug out for swearing at the referee.

The visitors continued to threaten, belying their lowly status and further chances fell to Tate and Paul Hodgson, but half time was reached with the scoresheet blank.

Half time: Consett 0-0 Roofing

With some more choice words from their manager no doubt ringing in their ears, Consett made a blistering start to the second half. Steven Brown floated a cross to the back post and Dickman forced a save from Roofing keeper Adam Dowell. From the resulting corner Philip Graham almost headed into his own net, and then from the next corner the ball was cleared only as far as Brown who shot inches wide.

Consett didn’t have long to wait to make the breakthrough, and they did so with two goals in as many minutes. On 50 minutes a neat move ended with David Pounder playing the ball into the box to Brown who flicked it across the area where Andrew Thompson was on hand to prod it home from close range.

Brown was the provider again two minutes later, as he chased a loose ball to the by-line before chipping a cross in front of goal to give Steven Johnson the easiest of headers to make it 2-0.

Consett continued to pour forward with Brown and Pounder both going close to adding a third. In a rare Jarrow Roofing attack on 63 minutes, Tate headed towards goal from Alan Oliver’s cross but Colling made a comfortable catch.

Steven Brown charges forward

This was only a temporary respite for the visitors though as Consett created chance after chance. Piecha’s header from Pounder’s corner was saved, Pounder himself pulled a shot wide after being set up by Johnson, then Brown was also off target after beating the offside trap fifteen minutes from time.

Steven Johnson heads on

Three minutes later a neat Consett move saw Pounder back heel the ball into the path of Brown whose stinging drive was saved by Dowell. Dowell made an even better save soon afterwards, tipping Pounder’s drive over the bar.

The relentless siege on the Roofing goal reached almost comical proportions seven minutes from time when first Brown saw a shot parried, then Thompson followed up but saw his shot blocked, then that rebound fell at the feet of Dickman who shot straight at Dowell with red shirts seemingly queuing up to fire at goal.

Consett’s third finally came in the 86th minute when substitute Gary Ormston fed a ball through to Brown who was forced wide. He turned inside and rolled the ball back to the incoming Ormston who slammed it home from eight yards for Consett’s 100th league goal of the season.
