Tomorrow night's game at Ashington has been POSTPONED due to a problem with the floodlights at Portland Park .

Consett progressed to the last 16 of the FA Carlsberg Vase for the first time in their history with a superb 4-1 victory in today's replay against Poole Town. It looked like being a different story in the opening exchanges as the visitors started like a whilrwind - opening the scoring on 9 minutes through a Mark Gaffney own goal, and having a very strong penalty shout denied. Consett gradually took control though and Steven Brown levelled the tie on 20 minutes, following up after Steven Johnson's shot had been saved. Then Johnson himself got on the score sheet in the 34th minute to put Consett ahead (pictured above). As with the first game profligate finishing looked like it might cost the Steelmen dearly, however to the joy of most of the impressive crowd of 514 Mattie Moffat's deflected strike on 69 minutes gave the home side some breathing space. Steven Brown made it three goals in two games when his 74th minute free kick deflected off the wall leaving Poole keeper Harvell stranded to put the result beyond doubt. The Steelmen now progress to the 5th Round where they will face Merstham, who overcame Pickering Town in their 4th round tie 4-2 after extra time. Match Report and pictures HERE.

A couple of our outstanding fixtures have been inserted into the February fixture list. On Wednesday 13 February 2008 we are at home to Billingham Synthonia and two weeks later, Wednesday 27 February we host Chester-le-Street Town at Belle Vue.

Today's FA Vase 5th Round draw handed Consett another mammoth task as the hurdles on the road to Wembley get increasingly higher. Should The Steelmen get past Poole Town in Saturday's replay they face another away game, this time at either Merstham or Pickering Town, whose first attempt at playing their 4th round tie was postponed on Saturday. Pickering Town stand 4th in the Northern Counties East League and have already disposed of Tow Law Town in this competition, registering a 3-2 victory at Ironworks Road in the 1st Round. They also knocked out North East opposition in the FA Cup, winning an Extra Preliminary Round tie 3-1 at Washington. However that might be considered the easier option compared to Surrey side Merstham. They are currently 15 points clear at the top of the Combined Counties League, having only conceded 9 league goals, and dropped just 5 points all season. Their goal difference is +66. Should we end up playing Merstham they will be the fourth consecutive league leaders Consett have faced.

In order to get to that stage though, Poole must first be overcome in the 4th Round replay at Belle Vue on Saturday, and the Club have released the following Press Release about that game, by way of a call to arms.

Consett AFC would like to thank all supporters who made the long trek down to Poole this weekend to cheer on the Steelmen to their 1-1 draw in the FA Vase 4th Round. The fact that a considerable number made the journey down, at great expense and at a cost of pretty a whole weekend is much appreciated by all at Belle Vue. The club would also like to thank everyone at Poole Town Football Club for their warm hospitality and hope we can return the favour to those of you who make the long trek up North for the replay.

Consett remain in the hat for the FA Vase after a tremendous 1-1 draw after extra time at the home of Wessex League leaders Poole Town. Making what may very well be the longest trip Consett have ever made for a competitive fixture, The Steelmen took the lead on the stroke of half time through a Steven Brown free kick, in front of a crowd of 449 including a good contingent from the North East. The lead was short-lived however, as Poole equalised eight minutes into the second half through a Mark Patterson own goal. Consett certainly gave as good as they got, arguably shading it and probably having the better chances. However we'll certainly take the draw and hope to finish the job at Belle Vue next Saturday. My thanks go to Andy Orman and Ian Claxton of Poole Town for the pictures - nice work lads. Match Reports (yes, two) and pictures now online.

Disappointment for Consett as this afternoon's home game against West Auckland was called off 45 minutes before kick off. The referee deemed that, in his opinion, two areas of the pitch were still frozen and thus unsafe, although it's fair to say neither manager was particularly overjoyed by the decision.

5 January 2008

Consett suffered a league defeat for only the third time this season as they went down 2-3 at a blustery Seaham Red Star. In an even contest played in difficult conditions the difference between the sides was Star striker Warren Byrne, who scored all three goals for the home side. His first came after quarter of an hour, but the Steelmen fought back to lead 2-1 at half time with two goals in three minutes. The first a spectaular diving header from Gary Ormston (pictured) on 36 minutes and the second from Mattie Moffat after 39. Moffat limped out of the action five minutes into the second half and almost immediately Byrne bagged his second. The winner came in the 69th minute when Byrne pounced on the rebound after Platten had brilliantly saved his initial volley. Match report and pictures HERE.
