December 2007 News

31 December 2007

Consett are organising a coach for supporters wanting to go to the FA Vase 4th Round game away at Poole Town on Saturday 19 January. There is a meeting being held at the club on Wednesday 2 January at 7.45 pm to take names and give supporters the relevant information, and also to see if same day travel, or travelling Friday and returning Saturday is the preferred option. Any supporters interested in travelling should contact John Hurst by email at j-hurst3@sky.com to register their interest.

29 December 2007

Consett finally played their FA Vase game with Trafford at the fourth time of asking and progressed to the 4th Round with a hard-fought but deserved 2-1 win. Mattie Moffat opened the scoring with a far post header from John Ewart's cross in the 31st minute. Consett then doubled their lead on the stroke of half time through Mark Patterson, whose shot found the net despite the best efforts of Southwood to clear. The Steelmen dominated the second half and wasted good chances to increase their lead, but ended up hanging on for the win when Barlow netted nine minutes from time to ensure a nerous finale. The win sees The Steelmen through to the last 32 for only the third time ever, equalling the achievement of 1999-2000 and 2000-01 seasons. However their task in the next round, away to Wessex League leaders Poole Town on Saturday 19 January, is about the toughest they'll have ever faced in this competition.

26 December 2007

A return to action for Consett after a 25-day gap saw The Steelmen run out 2-1 winners in a Boxing Day 11.00am fixture at local rivals Tow Law Town. Mattie Moffat put Consett ahead on 12 minutes but Walker equalised for The Lawyers 11 minutes later. Consett grabbed a vital win through Steve Johnson's winner 10 minutes from time which saw Consett stay within two points of leaders Durham City, who won 1-0 at Chester-le-Street Town.

22 December 2007

Consett's home FA Vase game with Trafford has been called OFF for the third time. With unfortunate timing, a heavy overnight frost hit last night and while the forecast had been for the weather to get warmer today, there was no improvement in the pitch by 11.00 and the decision was taken at that point to call the game off to prevent our friends from Trafford, who must be as heartily of all this as we are, making the long journey up from Manchester. We will now try again next week, which means our home game against Dunston is the latest fixture to be added to our ever-increasing backlog.

17 December 2007

As was the case last week, our midweek home game has been called off - with the kind agreement of the league and opponents Bedlington Terriers - to give the Skating Rink formerly known Belle Vue Park a chance of being fit for next Saturday's third attempt to host Trafford.

15 December 2007

Unsurprisingly, following a fourth consecutive night of sub-zero temperatures, today's FA Vase tie at home to Trafford has been called OFF for the second time due to the frozen Belle Vue pitch. The game has now been re-re-arranged for next Saturday, 22 December, kick off 3.00pm, and as a consequence the home game against Whitley Bay scheduled for that date has been moved.

Elsewhere, the identity of our 4th Round opponents, should we get that far, is now known as Poole Town and Cowes Sports managed to replay their game which was lost to the weather last week. Poole Town came out 1-0 winners, so it's a trip to Dorset for the winners of the Consett v Trafford tie.

10 December 2007

Today's FA Vase 4th Round draw was not kind to Consett. If we succeed in getting past Trafford in Saturday's re-arranged third round tie we have been drawn to play either Poole Town or Cowes Sports away on Saturday 19 January 2008. Both teams play in the Sydenham's Wessex League Premier Division, and indeed Poole are top of it. Cowes are based on the Isle of Wight, so our reward for winning on Saturday is an extremely hard away tie against the third league leaders we've been drawn against in a row, or a slightly less difficult tie against a club on a separate land mass altogether 400 miles away. If we are to win the Vase this year we're obviously going to have to do it the hard way!

9 December 2007

Following the postponement of yesterday's FA Vase game, our home game against Chester-le-Street Town scheduled for this Wednesday has been called off, with the agreement of the league and the opposition, to help ensure the pitch is fit for next Saturday's re-arrangement.

8 December 2007

Today's eagerly awaited FA Vase 3rd Round tie between the leaders of the Northern League and the North West Counties League fell victim to the wintry weather at Consett, with heavy snowfall in the hours leading up to kick off meaning the match had to be postponed. We will now entertain Trafford next Saturday, 15 December 2008, kick off again is 3.00pm

1 December 2007

A quick return to winning ways for Consett as they came away from today's top versus bottom clash at Jarrow Roofing with a comfortable 4-1 victory, exactly six years to the day since Consett's last win at this venue. Craig Robson set the ball rolling with a delightful 25-yard lob after the home keeper had dropped a cross - the midfielder breaking his Consett duck in his 53rd appearance. Mattie Moffat bundled home John Clark's cross on the stroke of half time (pictured above) to make it 2-0 at the break. Clark was the provider again setting up Steven Johnson for the third on the hour, and then Moffat latched on to a Craig Robson pass to make it 4-0 after 76 minutes. Former Steelman Craig Tate pulled one back two minutes later, however the game was to take a dramatic twist ten minutes from time with a triple sending off. Mark Gaffney and Roofing's Paul Taylor got involved in a spot of WWE, for which they both received straight reds. Craig Tate, who had earlier been booked for an altercation with one of his own players, was shown a second yellow for his part in the 20 man melee that ensued. Match report and pictures HERE.
