Bedlington, beaten finalists in 1999, and semi-finalists twice in the last seven years, were dumped unceremoniously out of this season’s FA Vase, losing heavily at home to their Arngrove Northern League rivals.

Ken Lindoe made just one change from the side that were denied by two late goals at home to Workington in the FA Cup seven days earlier. Mattie Moffat returned up front with Kraig Wilkinson making way for him.

In a drab opening quarter of the game neither goalkeeper was troubled. Consett’s Gary Ormston had a shot blocked while Derek Attwell headed over for the Terriers, but goalmouth action was sadly lacking.

Steven Brown leaps into a tackle

Consett gradually started to get on top in the game, and came close to opening scoring on 32 minutes when David Pounder’s right wing cross picked out Mattie Moffat, whose glancing header went just past the upright.

Craig Robson dominated the midfield

The deadlock was finally broken by the visitors four minutes later. John Clark took a throw in quickly and after Steven Brown had nudged a defender out of the way, Pounder was first to the loose ball and he swept it home through the legs of Terriers’ keeper Karl Dryden.

Bedlington almost struck back within a minute when Lee Hamilton rose to meet Derek Waters’ excellent cross but he headed wide under pressure.

Consett ought to have doubled their lead in the 41st minute when Pounder drilled a hard and low cross into the six yard box causing a goalmouth scramble in which Moffat and Ormston both attempted to head the ball home before it was eventually cleared off the line by Andrew Carr.

On the stroke of half time Terriers produced their best move of the half which ended with Alex Benjamin’s downward header being pushed round the post at full stretch by Consett stopper Craig Turns. Turns had to be lively to make a fine double save from the resulting corner and Consett reached the break with their one goal lead intact.

Half time: Bedlington 0-1 Consett

The second half was a different story altogether as the visitors ran riot. They doubled their advantage in the 51st minute when Pounder played a ball over the defence which Moffat latched on to before rounding the keeper and slotting home.

Seven minutes later it was 3-0 and effectively game over. Dryden came out to collect Craig Robson’s right wing corner but got nowhere near it, allowing Mark Gaffney to head into the unguarded net for his first Consett goal.

A dispirited Terriers side went four down on 65 minutes when Steven Brown converted from the penalty spot after James Harmison had brought down Moffat in the area.

Mark Gaffney clears his lines

After Moffat had spurned a glorious opportunity to score again, putting insufficient pace on a shot into an empty net allowing Robert Eastway to recover and clear off the line, Consett went nap in the 73rd minute. Neat interplay between substitute Steven Johnson and Jonjo Dickman ended with Johnson scoring with a scuffed shot from 12 yards.

Gary Ormston heads upfield

As the game entered the last quarter of an hour Terriers scored a consolation goal when Alex Benjamin connected with a long ball from defence to lob Turns. This however just spurred Consett into further action and they restored their five goal advantage on 80 minutes. Dryden’s poor clearance went straight to Brown who set up Johnson for the easiest of finishes.

Deep into stoppage time Johnson turned provider, blocking another poor clearance from Dryden which allowed Moffat to round the keeper and complete the scoring.

Full time: Bedlington 1-7 Consett
