End Of Season Poll 2006/07

Results

All the votes are in and so here are the results of the Sixth Annual consettafc.com Readers Poll.  A reasonably good response this year although not as big as I'd have expected after a season in which gates were the highest they've been for decades.  However, many thanks to those who took part and here, once again without a gold envelope in sight, are the results:

Player of the Season
1 : MICHAEL MACKAY
2 : Gary Ormston
3 : Jonjo Dickman

2005/06 - 1 : STEVEN BROWN, 2 : David Johnson, 3 : Gary Ormston
2004/05 - 1 : JEFF SUGDEN, 2 : Lee Suddes, 3 : James Platten
2003/04 - 1 : MICHAEL PITT, 2 : Jeff Sugden, 3 : James Platten
2002/03 - 1 : DARREN GRIMES, 2 : Jeff Sugden, 3 : Colin McLeod
2001/02 - 1 : JAMES PLATTEN, 2 = : Rod Butler & Colin McLeod

Six years, six different winners. This was an incredibly tight category with Gaz winning right up to the last few days of voting. However, a surge of Mackay votes towards the end meant Hartelpool's new number 25 came out on top. It was similarly tight for third place, with Jonjo actually tie-ing on points with Carl Piecha, but getting the nod on the total number of votes cast.

Most Promising Newcomer
1 : IAN ROBSON
2 : Jonjo Dickman
3 : Craig Robson

2005/06 - 1 : CARL PIECHA, 2 : Alan Oliver, 3 : Steven Brown
2004/05 - 1 : ROBBIE BLEMINGS, 2 : Mark Turner, 3 : Ben Thompson
2003/04 - 1 : MICHAEL PITT, 2 : Paul Terrell, 3= : Paul Curry & Andrew Morgan
2002/03 - 1 : STEVE SMITH, 2 : Andrew Green, 3 : Greg Scott
2001/02 - 1 : NEIL LOWDON, 2 : Andrew Thompson, 3 : Roy Gordon

Initially intended as a young player of the year award this has now come to be a "player in first season at the club" award, following a couple of seasons in the past where young players were jettisoned in favour of experienced heads. The same could be said of this season with only Carl Piecha among the current crop of first teamers under the age of 21. A bit of a procession this one with Ian Robson scoring almost twice as many points as Jonjo in second. Some promising performances towards the end of the season saw Craig Robson sneak into third place.

Goal of the Season
1 : JONJO DICKMAN - v Durham City (A)
2 : David Pounder - v Rossendale United (H)
3 : Kraig Wilkinson - v Chester-le-Street Town (N - DCC Final)

2005/06 - 1 : TATE - v Sunderland Nissan (H), 2 : Macdonald - v Kennek Ryhope (A), 3 : Ormston - v Worsbrough Bridge (H)
2004/05 - 1 : BANKS - v Whitley Bay (A), 2 : Edgcumbe - v West Auckland (H), 3 : Grimes - v Peterlee (H)
2003/04 - 1 : PITT - v Whickham (A), 2 : Terrell - v Norton (H), 3 : Kirkham - v Norton (A)
2002/03 - 1 : GREEN - v Prudhoe (H), 2 : McLeod - v Prudhoe (A), 3= : Grimes - v Durham (A) & B.Thompson - v West Auckland (A)
2001/02 - 1 : HALLIDAY - v Whitley Bay (H), 2 : Butler - v Bedlington (A), 3 : Davison - v Brandon (A)

No great pattern to the voting here as despite 144 goals to choose from, none seem to have stuck in the memory as especially outstanding. Jonjo's 25 yard screamer into the top corner on the plastic at Durham came out on top, while Davey Pounder's free kick in the FA Cup tie against Rossendale was your second choice. Another free kick, Kraig Wilkinson's quickly taken one to level the scores in the Durham Challenge Cup Final claimed third place just ahead of Pounder's goal to make it 3-1 in the same game. Incredibly none of Michael Mackay's 43 goals managed to make the top three, although a total of four of his strikes did feature eslewhere in the voting.

Favourite Away Ground
1 : DURHAM CITY
2 : Billingham Synthonia
3 : Sunderland Nissan

2005/06 - 1 : CROOK TOWN, 2 : Darlington RA, 3 : Prudhoe Town
2004/05 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2 : Whitley Bay, 3 : Billingham Synthonia
2003/04 - 1 : ASHINGTON, 2 : Crook Town, 3 : Prudhoe Town
2002/03 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2= : Whitley Bay & Billingham Synthonia
2001/02 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2 : Billingham Town, 3 : Ashington

A fourth win in six years for Durham City, and the two years it didn't win were quite simply because we didn't play there in those seasons! The ever popular Central Avenue ground of Synners got a place for the third time, while Nissan's ground came in third, although whether it would have done had we lost the Final there remains to be seen. An incredible 16 grounds in total received votes in this category. Given that Morpeth was yet to be visited when polling opened, Northallerton, Benfield, West Auckland, Jarrow Roofing and Ashington might be forgiven for wondering what they've done to upset people into not voting for them!

Top Scran (Best catering at an away ground)
1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN
2 : Chester-le-Street Town
3 : Durham City

2005/06 - 1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN, 2 : Darlington RA, 3 : Ryton
2004/05 - 1 : HORDEN CW, 2 : Durham City, 3= : Whitley Bay & Chester-le-Street Town
2003/04 - 1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN, 2 : Seaham Red Star, 3= : Whickham & Willington
2002/03 - 1 : WHITLEY BAY, 2= : Dunston Fed, Shildon & Newcastle Blue Star
2001/02 - no result, new category

Northallerton made it three wins in five years in this category. I can only assume that they realise people have driven such a long way to get there that they make more of an effort! Chester-le-Street and Durham who came second and third resepctively two years ago swapped places this time around.

Highlight/Funniest Moment of the Season:

This isn't really a category as such, more just an opportunity to share any funny stories or experiences accrued over the season.  Quite a few highlights this season, with most opting for the Durham Challenge Cup win, and few would argue with that. Michael Mackay's transfer to Hartlepool got a few votes, including one from his former team mate Andrew Bulford. A few people simply mentioned seeing such a talent in his prime was a highlight in itself. Also featuring were Ian Hamilton's legendary goal announcements, Ashington fans singing "the hills have eyes" whenever Michael Brown touched the ball, and one chap who simply said "World War 3 at The Fed"!!

Any other comments:

Not much in here really, most just commenting on what a great season it has been. Again some thanked me for my work on the website and programme which was appreaciated as ever. Other than that there was a query about where the big crowds disappeared to once it became clear we weren't going to win the league, as well as suggestions for new faces next season.

Many thanks to you all for particpating and here's hoping 2007-08 continues the upward development of the club.
