End Of Season Poll 2005/06

Results

Well the votes have been counted in the Fifth Annual consettafc.com Readers Poll.  A record number of people voted this year, which might be expected after such a successful season.  So, many thanks to those who took part and here, once again without a gold envelope in sight, are the results:

Player of the Season
1 : STEVEN BROWN
2 : David Johnson
3 : Gary Ormston

(2004/05 - 1 : JEFF SUGDEN, 2 : Lee Suddes, 3 : James Platten)
(2003/04 - 1 : MICHAEL PITT, 2 : Jeff Sugden, 3 : James Platten)
(2002/03 - 1 : DARREN GRIMES, 2 : Jeff Sugden, 3 : Colin McLeod)
(2001/02 - 1 : JAMES PLATTEN, 2 = : Rod Butler & Colin McLeod)

The fifth different winner of this category was Steven Brown, who completed a personal hat trick by adding this award to the Player of the Year, and Players Player of the Year awards he picked up at the club's presentation evening.  Brownie won by quite a distance but there a good few votes for David Johnson, with nearly everyone placing him in the top three.  Gary Ormston just shaded third place ahead of Michael Mackay and the ever-popular James Platten.

Most Promising Newcomer
1 : CARL PIECHA
2 : Alan Oliver
3 : Steven Brown

(2004/05 - 1 : ROBBIE BLEMINGS, 2 : Mark Turner, 3= : Ben Thompson)
(2003/04 - 1 : MICHAEL PITT, 2 : Paul Terrell, 3= : Paul Curry & Andrew Morgan)
(2002/03 - 1 : STEVE SMITH, 2 : Andrew Green, 3 : Greg Scott)
(2001/02 - 1 : NEIL LOWDON, 2 : Andrew Thompson, 3 : Roy Gordon)

I think I'm going to have to rename this award to Young Player of the Year as there was a real scattergun of votes as people interpreted newcomer to mean players in their first season at the club - which was just about everyone this year!  Even so I don't think there's any excuse for the joker who nominated David Robson in this category!  Anyway Carl Piecha's impressive form since his arrival from Ryton in February saw him take first place here, with Alan Oliver just sneaking past Steven Brown into third place.  The anomaly of Brownie finishing third in this category whilst winning Player of the Season highlights the confusion over who qualifies I suppose.  With a very young squad at Consett at present this was a wide open category and Messrs Bulford, Ormston, Macdonald and Mackay were all in the frame at one time or another.

Goal of the Season
1 : CRAIG TATE - v Sunderland Nissan (H)
2 : Scott Macdonald - v Kennek Ryhope (A)
3 : Gary Ormston - v Worsbrough Bridge (H)

(2004/05 - 1 : BANKS - v Whitley Bay (A), 2 : Edgcumbe - v West Auckland (H), 3 : Grimes - v Peterlee (H)
(2003/04 - 1 : PITT - v Whickham (A), 2 : Terrell - v Norton (H), 3 : Kirkham - v Norton (A)
(2002/03 - 1 : GREEN - v Prudhoe (H), 2 : McLeod - v Prudhoe (A), 3= : Grimes - v Durham (A) & B.Thompson - v West Auckland (A))
(2001/02 - 1 : HALLIDAY - v Whitley Bay (H), 2 : Butler - v Bedlington (A), 3 : Davison - v Brandon (A))

In the end 179 to choose from!  Lots of people had their own favourites, and inevitably the voting was close.  Tatey's extraordinary effort against Nissan came out on top, and I'll suggest that had he not left the club half way through the season it might have won more convincingly.  Some people I know didn't want to vote for a goal scored by a player who left in such controversial circumstances on a point of principle.  Scotty Mac's stunner at Kennek Ryhope, his fourth of four that day, was a deserving second, while the thunderous strike from Gaz Ormston to open the floodgates against Worsbrough Bridge in the Vase just shaded third place.  Michael Mackay's first goal in the 5-0 league win at Prudhoe was the unlucky goal to just miss out on a place.

Favourite Away Ground
1 : CROOK TOWN
2 : Darlington RA
3 : Prudhoe Town

(2004/05 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2 : Whitley Bay, 3 : Billingham Synthonia)
(2003/04 - 1 : ASHINGTON, 2 : Crook Town, 3 : Prudhoe Town)
(2002/03 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2= : Whitley Bay & Billingham Synthonia)
(2001/02 - 1 : DURHAM CITY, 2 : Billingham Town, 3 : Ashington)

A walkover for the Millfield here, and its prestige among Northern League grounds was recognised by its choice as venue for this season's Craven Cup Final.  The ground of newcomers RA was regarded by many as a welcome addition to the fold and it finished a clear second.  Prudhoe's Kimberley Park was third, unsurprising given the excellent pitch, brilliant floodlights, scenic location ... oh and the fact that we scored 10 goals there in two visits!

Top Scran (Best catering at an away ground)
1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN
2 : Darlington RA
3 : Ryton

(2004/05 - 1 : HORDEN CW, 2 : Durham City, 3= : Whitley Bay & Chester-le-Street Town
(2003/04 - 1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN, 2 : Seaham Red Star, 3= : Whickham & Willington
(2002/03 - 1 : WHITLEY BAY, 2= : Dunston Fed, Shildon & Newcastle Blue Star)
(2001/02 - no result, new category)

Northallerton reprised their 2003-04 victory in the Top Scran category although newcomers RA ran them close.  About two thirds of the grounds visited this year received at least one vote, so there was a hardly a consensus of opinion, with Ryton actually tie-ing with Crook on points in third place but getting the nod by virtue of number of actual votes received.

Highlight/Funniest Moment of the Season:

This isn't really a category as such, more just an opportunity to share any funny stories or experiences accrued over the season.  However there was actually a clear winner here, as several people nominated the same incident!  Step forward Mr Scott Macdonald, who, in the dressing room at Darlington RA where Consett were the club's first visitors on their return to the Northern League, responded to the news of a healthy sized crowd of about 400 with the immortal comment, "By the look of it the whole village must have turned out".  For downsizing Darlington (population in 2001 - 97,822) in such a grand manner he deserves an award.  Other nominations included, the referee falling over in the Craven Cup game at Penrith, the trip back from Liverpool, the 12-1 win against Guisborough, winning the title, and .. er .. Michael Mackay passing the ball!

Any other comments:

A lot of you took took the opportunity to thank the committee for another excellent season's work, and to thank me for my work on the website which was good of you.  A few wished Keith Nellis a speedy recovery and I certainly echo that. Among the suggestions included better advertising of home games, a number to call in the event of matches being in doubt because of the weather, and pork pies in the tea hut!  Now that IS a good idea!!
