Well the votes have been counted in the Fourth Annual consettafc.com Readers Poll.
A pretty poor response this year to be frank, and quite interesting to note that
few, if any, of the anonymous muppets who've got plenty to say on the Consett
forum managed to find the time to vote. Thanks nevertheless to those who took part and here,
without a gold
envelope in sight, are the results!
Player of the Season
1 : JEFF SUGDEN
2 : Lee Suddes
3 : James Platten
(2003/04 - 1 : MICHAEL PITT, 2 : Jeff Sugden, 3 : James Platten)
(2002/03 - 1 : DARREN GRIMES, 2 : Jeff Sugden,
3 : Colin McLeod)
(2001/02 - 1 : JAMES PLATTEN, 2 = : Rod Butler & Colin McLeod)
The fourth year and the fourth different winner of this award. It was,
however, a win by the proverbial country mile for Sir Jeffrey, as everyone who
voted had him placed either first or second. A good second place for Lee
Suddes in recognition of an outstanding season, and another placing for the
ever-dependable keeper.
Most Promising Newcomer
1 : ROBBIE BLEMINGS
2 : Mark Turner
3 : Ben Thompson
(2003/04 - 1 : MICHAEL PITT, 2 : Paul Terrell, 3= : Paul Curry & Andrew Morgan)
(2002/03 - 1 : STEVE SMITH,
2 : Andrew Green,
3 : Greg Scott)
(2001/02 - 1 : NEIL LOWDON,
2 : Andrew Thompson,
3 : Roy Gordon)
This was an even more comprehensive win than Jeff Sugden's in the main category
with everyone who voted bar one having Robbie in first place. Not many young
players got a run out this season, but those that did all made a strong impact
with Ben Thompson and Mark Turner both key players in the second half of the
season.
Goal of the Season
1 : ANDY BANKS - v Whitley Bay (A)
2 : Wayne Edgcumbe - v West Auckland (H)
3 :
Darren Grimes - v Peterlee (H)
(2003/04 - 1 : PITT - v Whickham (A), 2 : Terrell - v Norton (H), 3 : Kirkham - v Norton (A)
(2002/03 - 1 : GREEN - v Prudhoe (H),
2 : McLeod - v Prudhoe (A),
3= : Grimes - v Durham (A) & B.Thompson - v West Auckland (A))
(2001/02 - 1 : HALLIDAY - v Whitley Bay (H),
2 : Butler - v Bedlington (A),
3 : Davison - v Brandon (A))
OK so there weren't that many to choose from! Nevertheless there was
some odd voting in this category with Darren Grimes receiving two separate votes
for goals he didn't score! Andy Banks' mid-air volley that turned out to
be the winner at Whitley Bay came out on top - even though it turned out not to
be as crucial in the end as was thought at the time. Wayne Edgcumbe's solo
goal against West Auckland and Darren Grimes 30 yard dipper in the previous home
game against Peterlee actually finished level on points in second place, but
Edgy's goal shaded it on count-back.
Favourite Away Ground
1 : DURHAM CITY
2 : Whitley Bay
3 : Billingham Synthonia
(2003/04 - 1 : ASHINGTON, 2 : Crook Town, 3 : Prudhoe Town)
(2002/03 - 1 : DURHAM CITY,
2= : Whitley Bay & Billingham Synthonia)
(2001/02 - 1 : DURHAM CITY,
2 : Billingham Town,
3 : Ashington)
After last season's Second Division clubs only vote it was back to First
Division grounds again this time and a near exact replication of the 2002-03
result. Durham and Synners of course have their grounds used by Sunderland
and Middlesbrough Reserves respectively, whilst there was a suggestion a while
ago that Newcastle would use Bay's ground while Kingston Park was being
redeveloped, which is an indication of the quality of these grounds.
Top Scran (Best catering at an away ground)
1 : HORDEN CW
2 : Durham City
3= : Whitley Bay
3= : Chester-le-Street Town
(2003/04 - 1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN, 2 : Seaham Red Star, 3= : Whickham & Willington
(2002/03 - 1 : WHITLEY BAY,
2= : Dunston Fed, Shildon & Newcastle Blue Star)
(2001/02 - no result, new category)
I'll have to take your word for this one as I was too busy trying to keep my
4-year-old daughter amused at Horden to sample any of the catering! They
were pretty clear winners in this category though. Durham comes into the
top three this season, with 2002/03 winners Whitley Bay sharing third place with
Chester-le-Street.
Should the Consett Forum be shut down?
Yes : 38%
NO : 62%
The No's have it, as they say at Westminster. This has been somewhat
overtaken by events however as opinion seems fairly unanimous that the forum
should only be available to people who sign in, and that will be put in place in
the near future.
Highlight/Funniest Moment of the Season:
Fairly limited response in this category with the person who said, "Been a bad year not had many laughs.
No highlight sorry", summing up the general mood. Jeff Sugden
reaching 600 appearances was an undoubted highlight though, mentioned by a few
of you. Individual goals got a mention, specifically Andy Banks' at
Whitley Bay which made survival a very real possibility. Also, "Micky Ford opening his account after a very barren spell with a superb volley from 25 yards into top corner, then scoring again and game won 3-4 away to West Auckland.",
was nominated by a Mr. M Ford of Birtley!
Any other comments:
A lot of you took took this opportunity to thank me for the work on this
website so thanks very much for that. Others thanked the committee for
their tireless and thankless work throughout the season. Also some
opinions were expressed about the future of the forum, which, as already
mentioned, will continue but will no longer be open to anonymous posters.
