Well the votes have been counted in the Third Annual consettafc.com Readers Poll.
A reasonable response this year, although not many votes came in after the last
game of the season, which I suppose makes sense. Must remember to get the poll
out a bit earlier next year. Thanks again to those who took part and here,
without a gold
envelope in sight, are the results!
Player of the Season
1 : MICHAEL PITT
2 : Jeff Sugden
3 : James Platten
(2002/03 - 1 : DARREN GRIMES, 2 : Jeff Sugden,
3 : Colin McLeod)
(2001/02 - 1 : JAMES PLATTEN, 2 = : Rod Butler & Colin McLeod)
Absolutely nothing in this category, and one vote either way could have
changed the outcome completely. There were basically four leading contenders and
Paul Terrell missed out in fourth by the narrowest of margins. Suggs and
James actually tied on points but the skipper pinched second only on the number
of individual votes cast. The boy Pitt though crowned an excellent season
by taking first place.
Most Promising Newcomer
1 : MICHAEL PITT
2 : Paul Terrell
3= : Paul Curry
3= : Andrew Morgan
(2002/03 - 1 : STEVE SMITH,
2 : Andrew Green,
3 : Greg Scott)
(2001/02 - 1 : NEIL LOWDON,
2 : Andrew Thompson,
3 : Roy Gordon)
Michael Pitt also took this award, although the term newcomer seems to have
extended to those players in their first season at the club, as Paul Terrell for
instance has been around the Northern League a while. Unlike last season
there were few genuine newcomers in the Consett squad, with only a handful of
fringe players making debut league appearances this season. Of those
Andrew Morgan was deemed to be the pick of the bunch. Special commendation must
go to the joker who voted for Jeff Sugden in this category!
Goal of the Season
1 : MICHAEL PITT - v Whickham (A)
2 : Paul Terrell - v Norton (H)
3 : Peter Kirkham - v Norton (A)
(2002/03 - 1 : GREEN - v Prudhoe (H),
2 : McLeod - v Prudhoe (A),
3= : Grimes - v Durham (A) & B.Thompson - v West Auckland (A))
(2001/02 - 1 : HALLIDAY - v Whitley Bay (H),
2 : Butler - v Bedlington (A),
3 : Davison - v Brandon (A))
A hat-trick for Pitty! This one won by the proverbial country mile
though and was as near a unanimous decision as you're likely to get.
Michael struck on the half hour of the game against Whickham away to make the
score 2-0 with a stunning left foot volley following a quick Jon King free
kick. Paul Terrell's spectacular overhead volley on the last day of the
season at home to Norton was a popular choice too. Peter Kirkham had a few
contenders for this prize but his surging run and lethal 20 yard finish on a
blustery November night in Norton was your third choice.
Favourite Away Ground
1 : ASHINGTON
2 : Crook Town
3 : Prudhoe Town
(2002/03 - 1 : DURHAM CITY,
2= : Whitley Bay & Billingham Synthonia)
(2001/02 - 1 : DURHAM CITY,
2 : Billingham Town,
3 : Ashington)
Unfortunately no first division grounds to vote for this year, so the outcome
of this vote was always going to be interesting. And it turned it to be
another win for the Colliers. For some reason Consett weren't especially
popular visitors to Ashington this year, however it was obviously a popular
place to go for you lot. Crook Town, another fine traditional Northern
League ground, ran Portland Park fairly close, and Prudhoe's Kimberley Park was
also a popular choice, pipping Washington Nissan's complex into 4th place.
Top Scran (Best catering at an away ground)
1 : NORTHALLERTON TOWN
2 : Seaham Red Star
3= : Whickham
3= : Willington
(2002/03 - 1 : WHITLEY BAY,
2= : Dunston Fed, Shildon & Newcastle Blue Star)
(2001/02 - no result, new category)
I can't argue with this one as the variety of choice at Northallerton during
our promotion clinching last away game was simply incredible! The
overworked staff also provided the bait for the players and officials after the
match, and I can certainly vouch for the quality of the sausage sarnies.
Seaham Red Star got a few votes although I didn't get to try their wares
personally as I'd dashed off to watch the Liverpool v Newcastle match on telly!
Highlight/Funniest Moment of the Season:
There was definitely a recurring theme here as several of you cited the
promotion clinching win at Northallerton, an unquestionably highlight, not just
in terms of clinching promotion, but in the manner of the performance which was
arguably the best of the season. The other popular theme was that a number
of you mentioned the public slanging match between Ray Lish and Alan the Heckler
at the Newcastle Benfield Saints game as their highlight. Whatever the
rights and wrongs it certainly drew attention away from the slaughtering we were
getting on the pitch! One voter picked up on Ray Lish's miraculous return
to the touchline at Willington five days after having a heart attack, simply
incredible and so typical of the man. Another incident was when, "Some away manager kicked the ball and fell on his arse after interaction between home supporters".
Can anyone remember who this was? I must have missed it but it sounds like
it was tremendous entertainment!
Any other comments:
Not many, but most of those who took the opportunity to say something
congratulated the team on promotion at the first attempt. There was also a
request that players and management keep criticism of officials down to a
minimum, which, given the number of dissent related disciplinary problems this
season, is fair comment. Mention too was made of "Lishy's dress
sense" (no indication of which Lish that applied to) and physio Tom Hill's
never ending supply of jokes.
