September 2002 News

29 September 2002

The latest news and views from Ian Hamilton can be found on the Secretary's Update page, which has just been added to.  Today's addition to the page features news of Consett's new shirt sponsorship deal, and best wishes from the club to Little Brian who goes into hospital today for major back surgery.

At last, a league win for Consett!  Three points were acquired at Washington this afternoon as Consett stormed back from a 0-1 half time deficit to beat the home side 3-1.  Two goals from Colin McLeod including one from the penalty spot, plus an Andrew Thompson strike gave the Steelmen a much needed boost in a season which has been disappointing to date.  Match report and pictures now online.

It just keeps getting worse for Consett, as tonight they lost again - this time 0-2 at home to Morpeth Town. Despite dominating the first half the Steelmen were unable to convert any of their chances.  Then, as if to typify the way things are going at the moment, they went behind to a miscued cross which sailed over Stuart Kelly and into the net. Morpeth added a second 17 minutes from time to inflict upon Consett their fifth straight defeat in the league. Click here for a Match Report, sorry no pictures tonight - I forgot the camera!

Consett's dismal start to the season continued with yet another defeat today.  This time they were on the receiving end of a comprehensive 1-4 thumping at home to Dunston Fed which leaves them four points adrift at the bottom with just one point from six games played. Consett started well and led through a Chris Hodgson strike after just six minutes, however the Fed came back to win at a canter.  The defeat could have been worse as the visitors missed a penalty just before half time with the score at 1-1.  Click here for the Match Report

Further to yesterday's fixture update, confirmation that our next home match is against Dunston Fed is on SATURDAY 21 September.  Usual 3.00 kick off at Belle Vue.  Your correspondent now faces a frantic drive from Newcastle to try and make the kick off!!

15 September 2002

There has been a bit of fixture shuffling in the last few days so I shall try and summarise it. First of all our next match is against Dunston Fed at home, scheduled for this coming Saturday, however it may be played on Friday night instead so as to avoid a clash with the Newcastle v Sunderland game. Confirmation of the date will appear here as soon as I know for sure. Our Durham Challenge Cup home game against Harton & Westoe has been provisionally arranged for Wednesday 2 October, and the following Saturday 5 October we will now visit Guisborough Town. Finally our home game with Prudhoe cancelled due to our FA Cup commitments has been re-arranged for Wednesday 6 November.

14 September 2002

Rock bottom for Consett following today's 3-2 home defeat to Newcastle Blue Star, the team who were propping up Division 1 this morning.  Consett led after 2 minutes through a Gary Smith own goal, however the visitors came back to lead 2-1 early in the second half. An Andrew Thompson screamer levelled things, only for Star to clinch it mid-way through the second half thanks to a quickly taken Stephen Thompson free kick.  Match report and pictures now online.

11 September 2002

Consett won through to the 2nd round of the Northern League Cup this evening with an impressive 5-1 away win at Washington Nissan - who are currently flying high in Division 2.  Consett raced into a two goal lead in the first 21 minutes through Colin McLeod and Johnny Brown, but Peterson pulled one back for the home side just before half time.  Consett ran away with things in the second half though, thanks to two goals from Chris Hodgson and a late fifth from Jeff Sugden. Our second round opponents will be the other Washington team, as they disposed of Kennek Ryhope this evening.  Click here for a Match Report.

7 September 2002

Consett are still searching for their first league win of the season following today's 0-1 reverse at Peterlee. They can consider themselves unfortunate to have got nothing from an even contest, especially given the controversial nature of the only goal of the game. It was scored by Bowes on the stroke of half time, chesting in a left wing corner, however Consett keeper Stuart Kelly appeared to be fouled as he went up to meet it.  The goal stood despite Kelly's long and loud appeals to the referee and Consett's poor start to the season continues.  Match report now online.

DUNSTON GAME OFF

Due to Dunston Fed being involved in an FA Cup preliminary round replay against Thornaby tomorrow night, our game which was scheduled for Wednesday night is now postponed.  Apologies for only just spotting this this afternoon ... damned FA Cup, stupid tin pot competition anyway!

While you've got your diaries and pencils and rubbers out, please note that any plans to go to Boldon on Saturday should be scrapped.  Jarrow Roofing are involved in an FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round game at Brodsworth MW (who were beaten by Bedlington on Saturday) and so our league game against them is off too.  Instead our fixture against Peterlee Newtown away has been brought forward to Saturday.

CONSETT OUT OF FA YOUTH CUP

News of yesterday's FA Youth Cup 1st Qualifying round tie is that Consett were somewhat unfortunate to lose to Witton Albion 3-2.  Further details can be found on the Juniors Page.
