Well here are the results of the Second Annual consettafc.com Readers Poll. Due
to the early end to the season, a few technical problems, and probably
post-relegation apathy, the response was a bit down on last year, but the
results are just as interesting. So thanks again to those who took part and without further ado, here are the results - and not a gold
envelope to be seen!
Player of the Season
1 : DARREN GRIMES
2 : Jeff Sugden
3 : Colin McLeod
(2001/02 - 1 : JAMES PLATTEN, 2 = : Rod Butler & Colin McLeod)
This was a very tight contest and in the end Darren just pipped the
ever-reliable Suggs by the narrowest of margins. Grimer certainly deserved
his victory though, with a string of committed performances despite more often
than not being asked to play out of position. It probably says a lot about
the sort of season that Consett have had that there were no less than nine
contenders for this category, however the first three were a clear distance
ahead of the chasing pack.
Most Promising Newcomer
1 : STEVE SMITH
2 : Andrew Green
3 : Greg Scott
(2001/02 - 1 : NEIL LOWDON,
2 : Andrew Thompson,
3 : Roy Gordon)
Well, apart from a couple of members of the Greg Scott Fan Club, every single
person who voted in this category placed Steve Smith first. Steve has had
a truly outstanding season and is a great prospect for the future.
Unfortunately it seems that his availability in the coming season or two may be
restricted as he goes off to University, but hopefully we'll still see him in
the red shirt from time to time. Andrew Green made a great impact, despite
only coming into the side in the last couple of months, he immediately
established himself as a first team regular. The one bright spot of this
season has been the form of the younger players towards the end of the season,
and Greg Scott narrowly squeezed home in third ahead of other deserving
candidates Richie Lognonne, Ben Thompson & David Hogg.
Goal of the Season
1 : ANDREW GREEN - v Prudhoe (H)
2 : Colin McLeod - v Prudhoe (A)
3= : Darren Grimes - v Durham (A)
3= : Ben Thompson - v West Auckland (A)
(2001/02 - 1 : HALLIDAY - v Whitley Bay (H),
2 : Butler - v Bedlington (A),
3 : Davison - v Brandon (A))
Let's be honest, there weren't many to choose from this season!
However, the two goals above that Prudhoe were on the receiving end of seem to
have stuck in the minds of most people. Andy Green's goal was all the more
remarkable in that it came in his first full start. Having opened his
Consett account a few minutes earlier in the game, Andy capitalised on hesitancy
between defender and keeper to lift a clever clipped half volley over the keepers
head. Macca's thunderbolt at Kimberley Park, which he hit on the rebound
after his equally well struck first effort had cannoned against the post, was a
popular choice too. Several other contenders featured, but the 25 yard
screamer from Darren Grimes at Durham (when we were 0-4 down after 15 minutes),
and Ben Thompson's clever lob for his first Consett goal that gave us a 2-0 lead
at West Auckland, shared third place.
Favourite Away Ground
1 : DURHAM CITY
2= : Whitley Bay
2= : Billingham Synthonia
(2001/02 - 1 : DURHAM CITY,
2 : Billingham Town,
3 : Ashington)
As was the case last year New Ferens Park won this by a huge margin, and once
again there was a broad church of opinions for the 2nd and 3rd places. In
the end though, Hillheads and Central Avenue shared second place, from a large
chasing pack where it would probably be easier to list the clubs that DIDN'T get
a vote. Interesting to note that had the pre-season plans for Newcastle
Reserves to play at Whitley Bay while they were temporarily evicted from
Kingston Park come to fruition, then the three winning grounds would have been
the home grounds of each of the North East's Big Three's reserve teams.
Top Scran (Best catering at an away ground)
1 : WHITLEY BAY
2= : Dunston Fed
2= : Shildon
2= : Newcastle Blue Star
(2001/02 - no result, new category)
I wondered whether this would shed any light on whether there was a widely
acknowledged Northern League ground where the bait was good. Apparently
not, as there was a right old scattergun of votes here. Whitley Bay won
it, and to be fair I can't disagree with that one. However there was a
three way tie for second, and whilst I agree the bacon sarnies from the mobile
van at Blue Star were top, I'll have to take your word for Shildon as I gave up
after waiting 10 minutes in the queue and almost missed the start of the second
half. Maybe the queue was an indication of how good it was!
Highlight/Funniest Moment of the Season:
Again, few highlights to choose from, but three recurring themes did crop
up. First the home win against Durham towards the end of the season.
In front of a big crowd against a team sitting fourth in the league an
inexperienced Consett team ripped their opponents to shreds, winning by two when
it could easily have been a hatful. A glimmer of hope that relegation
might have been staved off, but that soon dwindled! Second the form of
Consett's youngsters and specifically in the home game against Prudhoe where
four of the side were making their first starts. Andy Green's goals in
this game also got a mention. Third the return of James Platten and his
subsequent brilliant performance at Bedlington. There's no doubt he'd have
have been a strong contender for Player of the Season again had he not missed
half the season through injury.
Any other comments:
Only one thing occupied this category, as many of you took the opportunity to
thank Colin Carr for his magnificent service to Consett AFC over the last 15
years. It was of course unfortunate that his reign should with the
disappointment of relegation, but there have been many highs during his reign in
charge and consettafc.com would like to take this opportunity to echo these
sentiments. Thanks for the memories Colin.
