Consett must still wait for their first league win of the
season following this disappointing defeat. Consett's
record against Peterlee last season was good. In a
season that brought little cheer for the Steelmen, they did
the double over the Newtowners as well as knocking them out
of the FA Vase. On another day they could have won
this one too but luck was not on their side. A couple of
changes from the side that were beaten at Spennymoor in the
Cup last week - Darren Grimes replacing Andrew Thompson in
midfield and Stuart Kelly returning in goal. |
The game got off to a very slow start and in a
drab first half hour neither keeper was tested. Just after the
half hour mark Colin McLeod left the field to be replaced by Andrew
Thompson, seemingly having not recovered fully from the head injury
suffered at Spennymoor last week. As the first half entered
its closing stages though Peterlee's pressure started to mount. In
the 38th minute, following a free kick from the right Clarkson got
in a firm header at the back post which Kelly got down well to
save. Two minutes later a spot of pinball in the Consett area
ended with Hinton directing a close range goalwards which Gareth
McKenna blocked on the line.
| Deep in stoppage time at the end of the first half though
came the game's defining incident. Peterlee were
awarded a left wing corner which Green swung into the danger
area. Stuart Kelly in the Consett goal seemed to be
impeded as he came to collect it and the ball sailed over
his head and into the chest of the inrushing Andrew Bowes,
and from there into the Consett net. The goal was
awarded, much to the fury of Kelly who raced half the length
of the pitch in pursuit of the referee claiming he had
received an elbow in the face.

Suggs goes in where it hurts.

The second half saw Consett emerge the
stronger side, possibly spurred on by the injustice of the
goal. Peterlee could have gone two up within five minutes of
the restart when a Green effort was well saved by Kelly, but from
then on it was Consett who created the best chances.

Hodgson comes closest to scoring.

Johnny Brown got Consett's first effort on target just
before the hour mark but his looping header from
Andrew Thompson's cross was easily collected. The on
66 minutes, during a spell of pressure which saw Consett
force several corners, Jeff Sugden created havoc in the
Peterlee box allowing Chris Hodgson to get in a shot from
six yards. However Newtowners keeper Dawson got down
well to deflect the ball over the bar. The visitors
continue to have the lion's share of the possession and
forced corner after corner but as the game wore on the
equaliser grew more elusive. Seven minutes from time a
spectacular scissors kick from Darren Grimes forced a sharp
save from Dawson, but the game ultimately petered out and
Peterlee held on to claim a rather fortuitous three points.
