October 2002 News

30 October 2002

A couple of re-arranged fixtures for your information.  On Tuesday 19 November we will visit Jarrow Roofing and then the following week we entertain the mighty Bedlington Terriers at Belle Vue. That match is on Wednesday 27 November, both games are 7.30 kick offs.

JEFF REACHES 500 MARK

Consett captain Jeff Sugden reached the landmark of 500 competitive appearances for The Steelmen in the game against Billingham Town on 26th October. This is a tremendous achievement by ‘Suggs’, a local lad, who joined the club straight from junior football. He has been a great servant to the club and has remained loyal to his local team, through thick and thin, for which we are all extremely grateful. Apart from being a great centre-half, he is a tremendous leader on the pitch, and a great ambassador for the club off it. He has been Club Player of the Year and Players Player on several occasions and in season 1999-2000 was voted the Northern League Player of the Year, a tremendous accolade. Manager Colin Carr said, “It’s a great achievement by Jeff to play so many games for the club. He’s had some great games for us, and I haven’t had an ounce of trouble from him. You don’t hear of many players these days reaching 500 games at all levels. I know that I can rely on him, and hopefully he can help us pull away from the relegation zone. And I’m sure that he can keep going well beyond the 500 mark.” Those sentiments are echoed by all at Consett Football Club.

The winning numbers from Consett's October monthly draw are - 179, 380, 1021 & 1348.

26 October 2002

A battling performance by Consett saw them draw 3-3 with high flying Billingham Town in a ding-dong encounter at Belle Vue.  Consett took the lead though Neil Lowdon, only to go 1-2 down by half time.  They then battled back themselves to lead 3-2 through goals from Scott Wilson and an own goal. The lead lasted only minutes though as Bill Town ended the scoring with an equaliser.  Match Report now online.

24 October 2002

It's been a while since the Juniors page was updated, but it now features this season's results and current league standings for the under 12s and under 17s.  Hoping to be able to add information on the other junior sides in due course.

23 October 2002

Consett's interest in this season's Durham Challenge Cup ended for this season as they went down, not unexpectedly, to Gateshead of the Unibond Premier League.  No disgrace in the 1-4 scoreline at the International Stadium though, especially given that Consett lost Colin McLeod and both keepers during the game to injury. 21 October 2002

The draw for the second round of the FA Vase has been made and Consett will meet familiar opposition in the form of Billingham Town at home.  The tie is to be played on Saturday 9 November 2002, 3.00 kick off.  Billingham Town are of course having an excellent season and currently stand in 3rd place in Division One, despite having had 3 points deducted for fielding an ineligible player.  The sides have a dress rehearsal for this contest on Saturday when 'The Social' visit Belle Vue in a league match.

Other news, Roy Gordon has left the club and has signed for his former club North Shields.

19 October 2002

Following last week's impressive victory over Esh Winning it was back down to earth with a bump for Consett today as they lost at home to fellow strugglers Chester-le-Street. Losing 1-0 to a second half goal from Elrington, Consett were at least spared the ignominy of returning to the bottom of the league by the fact that Washington weren't playing. Match report now online.

18 October 2002

News of a fixture change.  Due to a fixture clash Washington have with a Durham County Cup match, our League Cup tie at Washington has been put back a week to Wednesday 6 November.  Our scheduled league game that night at home to Prudhoe has now been postponed.

14 October 2002

With no midweek game this week, Consett have a hastily arranged friendly against Haydon Bridge United of the Northern Alliance Division 1 on Wednesday night (16 October 2002) at Belle Vue.  A useful side who currently stand 3rd in their league, their results this season include wins by 8-2, 7-1, 6-0 and a 15-1 thrashing of Forest Hall.  Should be some goals, why not pop along if you don't fancy watching England on the box again after Saturday's performance in Slovakia?!

12 October 2002

Consett got back to winning ways in spectacular style with a 5-1 home win over Esh Winning this afternoon. After going behind to an early goal, Consett stormed back with two in a minute from McLeod & Suddes to lead 2-1 at half time. Early in the second half both sides were reduced to 10 men when Johnny Brown and Howe of Esh saw red. Consett then went on to add three further goals from McLeod, Grimes and an own goal, to rack up their first home points of the season.  Match report now online.  (NB with your correspondent laid up following a car accident, many thanks go to Steve Booth, visiting from Margate in Kent, for keeping me up to date via text messages!).

Other news, our Durham Challenge Cup tie at Gateshead has now been set for Wednesday 23 October 2002 and is a 7.45 pm kick off.  This means that our match away to Marske United (scheduled for 22 Oct) has now been postponed.

10 October 2002

In attendance at Whitley Bay on Tuesday night was the Adelaide Branch of the Consett Supporters Club, aka Jim McCusker - pictured extreme right above with (L-R) Andrew Pearson, Brian Davison, Ian Hamilton & Dave Pyke.  This was Jim's third Consett game in the last couple of years and he hasn't seen us score in any of them.  So that's why we lost!  The advent of consettafc.com means that many ex-pats are able to keep in touch with the goings on at Belle Vue.  You may have seen a recent guestbook entry from Derek McVickers, currently residing in Perth, W Australia.  Furthermore, Ian Hamilton has recently been in touch with the fantastically named Australian side Heffron Hawks. They've kindly put a link on their site to this one, so it gives me great pleasure to do likewise, click here.  A continuation of the antipodean theme in the shape of the imminent signing of Mark Viduka is unfortunately very unlikely ...

8 October 2002

A calamitous defeat for Consett at Whitley Bay this evening.  In a game played in a blustery wind throughout the FA Vase holders romped to a 5-0 win. In all honesty the home side could have run up double figures and only some heroics by Andy Colling in the Consett goal kept the score vaguely respectable. Click here for a Match report.

Elsewhere in the league wins for Prudhoe and Chester-le-Street tonight leave Consett more isolated at the bottom.

Other news, Billingham Town, Esh Winning, West Auckland Town and Alnwick Town have had three points deducted for fielding ineligible players.

5 October 2002

An encouraging performance today against a strong Guisborough side, but unfortunately Consett went down to another league defeat. Despite outplaying the home side for long spells in the first half, Guisborough came out on top 3-1, Colin McLeod scoring Consett's goal on the half hour. Click here for a Match Report.

Some other news, the draw for 1st round of the Durham Challenge Cup has been made and Consett's run of luck shows no sign of changing - we've got Gateshead away! Tie to be played probably on 22 or 23 October, confirmation will appear here as soon as we have it.

2 October 2002

Consett made it through to the first round of the Durham Challenge Cup this evening, but not without some difficulty as two late goals from McLeod and Hodgson gave the Steelmen a 2-0 win over Harton & Westoe.  It took 78 minutes for Consett to break down the Wearside League side, who then almost forced the game into extra time before Hodgson made it safe with a stoppage time second. (Apologies for the somewhat dyslexic earlier version of this posting which was done hurriedly while I was in an advanced state of refreshment!)
