Consett were unfortunate not to take something from this evenly contested game as they more than matched Synthonia over the 90 minutes, but the visitors took the points with two second half goals, one of which came deep in stoppage time.

Manager Colin Carr selected the same eleven players that had played so well against Bedlington in midweek. Tony Halliday, who missed the match against Terriers with flu, returned to the subs bench.

After nine minutes Billingham’s Wood cut inside to get a shot in but he shot straight at Stuart Kelly. Four minutes later The Steelmen should have done better when they had a four against one situation but O’Gorman got back to block Chris Hodgson’s effort. From the resulting corner Neil Lowdon’s header was comfortably saved by Mohan.

Synners could have took the lead after 27 minutes when Flanagan, looking offside, broke clear. But Kelly, after initial hesitation, came out to force him wide and Steve Smith covered to snuff out the danger. A minute later Consett almost made the breakthrough when Hodgson set up Scott Wilson but he shot across the face of goal.

A better chance came the home side’s way just after the half hour mark. This time Wilson played a throughball into the path of Gareth McKenna but he lacked composure and sliced his shot wide with only Mohan to beat. Synthonia also wasted a good opportunity a couple of minutes later when Radigan’s shot on the turn was only a coat of paint wide of the post, but he should really have been on target.

Half Time: Consett 0-0 Synthonia

The vital breakthrough came only eight minutes into the second period. Kelly failed to deal with a cross but nevertheless the defence seemed to have covered the danger, but the ball wasn’t cleared quickly enough and Radigan blasted the ball into the roof of the net.

After 67 minutes McKenna tried a free-kick but it was straight at the visiting keeper. A minute later, at the other end, Wells’ cross was deflected over the stranded keeper but Flanagan failed to apply the finish. The Steelmen struggled to create openings against the solid Synners defence, with Synthonia quite content to keep the game tight.

In the third minute of stoppage time Lowdon’s well struck shot forced Mohan into a diving save. But Billingham made sure of victory with an undeserved second two minutes later. Kelly again failed to hold a ball into the danger zone and Wood was on hand to poke the ball home from close in.

Full Time: Consett 0-2 Synthonia
