August 2002 News

31 August 2002

The FA Cup trail ends for another year as Consett lost comprehensively to Spennymoor United of the Unibond First Division in today's Preliminary Round tie. The Steelmen battled well to keep the score to a respectable 4-0, given that things were looking grim just after the half hour mark at 3-0 down with the Moors having just missed a penalty. Match report now online.

29 August 2002

Confirmation has now been received that Saturday's FA Cup Preliminary Round tie at Spennymoor United is definitely ON, the FA having lifted the suspension imposed on the Moors.

28 August 2002

With still no news as to whether Saturday's game at Spennymoor is going ahead, now is a good time to point out that Consett are definitely involved in one very important game this weekend.  The Under 18 side are at home to Witton Albion in the First Round of the FA Youth Cup this Sunday 1 September, kick off 3.00. The under 18s have got off to a disappointing start to their season so far (see the Juniors Page for details) but hopefully a full squad will be available and a decent crowd will turn up to support them. Furthermore, given that someone from Witton Albion was posting derogatory comments about Consett on the guestbook here a couple of weeks ago, I will take great pleasure in seeing them beaten.

A badly depleted Consett side went down 2-0 away to Brandon United in today's Bank Holiday fixture, the home side maintaining their 100% league record in the process. Steven Huggins claimed both goals for Brandon. Click here for a Match Report.

Other news, Consett have been drawn at home to Durham Alliance side Harton & Westoe in the Preliminary Round of the Durham Challenge Cup. The tie is to be played some time before 5 October.

24 August 2002

Consett started their FA Cup campaign with a 4-1 home over Pontefract Collieries of the Northern Counties East Division One. Johnny Brown headed Consett into a 26th minute lead, which they held until half time.  Pontefract equalised 40 seconds into the second half, however Colin McLeod restored Consett's lead on the hour. Further goals in the last two minutes from McLeod and Ian Davison completed the scoring, although the game was much closer than the scoreline suggests.  Click here for a Match Report.

Consett's next FA Cup tie is, at the time of writing, provisional.  On Saturday we are drawn to visit Spennymoor in the FA Cup Preliminary Round as a reward for today's victory. However, Spennymoor are presently suspended by the FA because of financial problems and if the suspension is not lifted we will be given a bye into the First Qualifying Round. We hope to have confirmation soon so watch this space!

20 August 2002

Consett are off the mark for the season as they held last season's Northern League runners-up Tow Law to a 2-2 draw at the Ironworks Road Ground.  A trademark Ian Davison free kick and cross-cum-shot from Lee Suddes that he'll probably swear blind he meant turned a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 lead, however the home side equalised soon afterwards and that was how it finished. Click here for a Match Report.

Elsewhere the early pace setters are West Auckland and Jarrow Roofing who have won both their games so far, West have yet to concede a goal and put 5 past Billingham Town this evening. At the other end Shildon are enduring a baptism of fire in Division One with their second 5-1 defeat in 4 days. Also, enjoy the rare sight of Bedlington Terriers in the relegation zone - it won't last!

17 August 2002

A disappointing start to the season as Consett lose their opening match at home to Guisborough Town 0-3. Two down in 16 minutes, Consett put up a spirited fight, however a crucial third just after the interval meant a blank start to the opening day. To make matters worse, debutant Scott Wilson was sent off in the closing minutes for a second bookable offence. Click here for a full Match Report.

16 August 2002

On the eve of the new season, goalkeeping problems at Consett. James Platten, who was injured whilst being fouled for Birtley's first goal in the pre-season friendly at the end of July is going to be out for some time - a major blow to lose last year's Player of the Season. With Stuart Kelly also having work commitments, the latest update from Secretary Ian Hamilton is that former Crook Town and Durham City keeper Andy Colling has been signed as cover and is expected to play in tomorrow's opener against Guisborough Town.

11 August 2002

A morale boosting win for Consett in their latest pre-season friendly.  They eased to a 6-0 away win over Durham Alliance side Whitehill at the Riverside with goals from Chris Hodgson, Andrew Thompson (2), Darren Grimes and sub Darren Fletcher (2).

A reminder that Winlaton Hallgarth will be visiting Belle Vue tomorrow night for Consett's final friendly before the real stuff begins. Kick off is 7.00.

3 August 2002

Consett suffered their latest pre-season defeat losing dismally 5-1 at home to Northern League Division 2 side Horden Colliery Welfare.  The Steelmen were three down at half time, with Chris Creamer getting two for the visitors. A Chris Hodgson effort from close range early in the second half gave a brief glimmer of hope for a fightback, but Horden made it 4-1 within a couple of minutes, and added a fifth in the latter stages.  Obviously it's still early days but on the evidence of our friendlies so far it could be a long season ahead.

On Wednesday Consett lost 2-0 at home to a youthful Sunderland eleven.  A goal in each half won it for the visitors at a fogbound Belle Vue.

Consett have another home friendly on Monday 12 August when we entertain Winlaton Hallgarth of the Northern Alliance - kick off 7.00 pm.
