Following the final games at the bottom of the league today, Prudhoe Town will be joining ourselves and Newcastle Blue Star in Division Two next season.  Prudhoe lost at home to Morpeth, while Peterlee got the three points they required with a win at already doomed Blue Star.

Everyone connected with Consett AFC sends their deepest condolences to the family and friends of John Challoner, a Northern League official who died suddenly last Sunday night at the tragically young age of 37.  John was well known to Consett, frequently refereeing our pre-season friendlies and arranging on our behalf for the other officials to attend.  He was also known to many of the players as a referee in the Sunday Leagues.  A minute's silence was held before our game at Shildon on Saturday in his memory and he will be very sadly missed.

Well that's that.  Consett were beaten 0-2 at Shildon today and as a consequences are relegated to Division Two.  The Steelmen got off pretty lightly to be honest in a match where they failed to register a single shot on target in 90 minutes.  Match Report and pictures now online.  After the match Colin Carr decided to step down as Consett manager after 14 years in charge.

Elsewhere in the Northern League, in the big title decider at Welfare Park Brandon defeated Bedlington 1-0 to clinch the Northern League championship and in the process end the Terriers five year reign as top dogs!

Prudhoe Town were beaten at home by Shildon 1-3 this evening, meaning that Consett survive to fight another day.  It is still imperative that Consett beat Shildon themselves at Dean Street on Saturday, however a draw might suffice, provided Prudhoe lose their two remaining games by a combined negative goal difference of three.  Unfortunately one of those games is at Peterlee on Saturday, who, with four games left, still have every chance of finishing above us and Prudhoe, sending us both down!

Consett responded well following their 0-6 defeat at Morpeth on Thursday with a superb performance at West Auckland today.  However they were denied the three points they thoroughly deserved by a last minute equaliser from West who forced a 2-2 draw.  Things could and should have been different had a stonewall penalty been awarded to Consett when Ben Thompson was upended with the score at 2-0.  However, despite the linesman flagging for the foul, the referee who was much further away overruled.  Match report and pictures here.

10 April 2003

Consett took one giant leap towards the Second Division this evening after a humiliating 0-6 defeat at Morpeth Town.  The Steelmen were behind after just 13 minutes to a goal from McAndrew who went on to complete a first half hat trick as the home side ran up 4 first half goals.  Morpeth were forced to play the last 15 minutes with 10 men, having run out of substitutes, but nevertheless added their 5th and 6th during that period.  Click here for the full grisly Match report and pictures.

5 April 2003

Consett rounded off this season's action at Belle Vue with a disheartening performance at home to Shildon.  They lost 0-3 to goals from Barnes, Rutter and Bayles, and with Prudhoe picking up a point at Marske the Steelmen are now two points behind the Tynedale side with just three away games remaining.  Match Report here.

1 April 2003

A disappointing defeat on a bitterly cold night at Belle Vue. Consett lost at home to Jarrow Roofing 0-2, the same score as the reverse fixture at Boldon 2 weeks ago, and, as was the case in that game, the Steelmen can consider themselves unlucky to have nothing to show for their efforts.  Things might have been different had Colin McLeod converted a 13th minute penalty, however Hoggeth saved for the Roofers, who clinched game with two goals in ten minutes around the half hour mark.  Click here for the Match report and pictures.

A fixture re-arrangement to be aware of.  The last outstanding fixture of the season, Morpeth away, has now been set for a week on THURSDAY 10 April, usual 7.30 kick off at Craik Park.
